Anyone know of a traditional 1 1/8 (EC34) headset that has a bit less stack height than a Hope? Current fork has nothing to spare and my (possible) new frame has a 10mm longer headtube.

Crank Bros did one with where the bearing were integrated into the external cups and they were nice and low stack but they discontinued them because they were utter shite.

Low stack stem instead maybe. Like a Ragley Stubbing?

Have a look at a DMR Defy stem, only 31mm stack. Might solve your problem

Exactly what I was about to suggest. The fork that came from my Jeffsy had a nice short steerer which meant work the same length steerer on my new frame, but with an external lower cup, I was losing 14mm to the lower cup.

The 35mm defy has a 27mm stack height, the 50mm has 31mm. I've got the 50mm version, it should let me fit 10mm of spacers under the stem.

Not a mountain bike in this case, so the familiar stem options won't suit, and the existing stem isn't tall.

I had one of those Crank Bros headsets years back, never seen a component disintegrate so fast, the cups were rusty in a week, the bearings followed shortly behind.

Cane Creek 40 saves me 3 and a bit mm.. that has me almost into 'get away with it' territory.
