I'm waiting for a road frame to arrive and it'll need a headset, I've got a 4lb lump hammer so I'll be fitting it myself.
But which headset do I need?

Description of requirement is:
1 1/8" ITS (Hidden) Headset

A quick look at a random site gives me:
1. Campagnolo Aheadset for hidden headset frames. Looks good.
2. Aheadset.
3. Ritchey threadless.
4. Zero stack.

This would appear to be the one which fits the desription perfectly and is what I will try and source, might be difficult in Madrid. Second choice is Nº1 Campagnolo Aheadset for hidden.

But what is the difference between the others and will they suit a hidden headset frame?

Yours sincerely

Confused.

Is the frame designed for an internal or integrated? You say hidden, so I assume internal, what is the OD of the headtube? Does it come with the cups already in the frame if it is an Internal? Or if a proper integrated the bearings sit directly in the headtube-if that is the case, what angle bearings is it designed for?
As you can see, there are still loads of variables even with the details you've given.

Them's the details I've got, the frame hasn't arrived yet!! I had just remembered about integrated before you answered. So I'm not the only one who thinks it's complicated...

I say hidden because that's how it's described, on SJS Cycles the have this Aheadset for frames with hidden set head tubes!!

I'll probably take the frame to get the headset matched, but I would like to know the differences between the above and which, if any will be compatible with the hidden headset???

Sincerely

Even more confused.

The problem often lies with how different people describe things. Many people still get integrated/internal(semi integrated) mixed up. Internal ones have cups that press into the frame & the bearings then drop into them, so the entire headset is inside the headtube.

Integrated ones have a chamfer inside the headtube itself for the bearing to sit directly on, which can be cut at either 36 or 45 degrees, depending on the design.
Hidden headset I don't know to be honest, sounds like someone's given one of the above yet a different name!

Now with the 36 or 45 degree bit, it now sounds like an integrated the Alpina comes as either 36*45 or 45*45.

Now off to Chris King to explain, thanks.

I've just bought an FSA integrated geadset for my Vertex - there are many variables, I figured out that I needed a 45/45 degree with 42mm ID. Now there 36/45 and all manner of diameter - took me about 2 weeks to find a good one at a good price - got it from Merlin for £15 (FSA Orbit CE) although it' s 36/45 they've just sent, so currently have the wrong version!
