Hi all. Trying to put a headset in my new Hello Dave frame and the ID of the headtube is 55.6 and the OD of the headset is between 56.0 to 56.1. What is the standard tolerance on these as this is a massive interference. I have also lightly sanded the inner if the headtube as well to remove any excess paint.
Hope's specs say 55.9 +/- 0.05 for the ID of the headtube and 56.05 +/- 0.05 for the OD of the cup.
Ok thanks for that.
You could get it reamed? Ive had steel headtubes (not on ones, or in this case sick) that were massively on the piss. An old DMR in particular was so bad the shop didnt want to cut it down to the metal as it had already taken so much off so left it kinda flat with some powder coat still there!
I suspect its not standard practice to machine them after welding like it is perhapse aluminium frames (more difficult and/or not as much distortion during welding and heat treatment?).
Found that Decathlon would do it for £12, great for serial frame swappers!
The Park Tool reamer reams the head tube ID to 55.95mm, for headset cup OD 56.00-56.10mm. (for ZS56 and EC56 headset cups)
Remove paint from inside, pretty sure cups should be against raw material, my steel DMR frames never had paint on the inside, same as the inside of the seat tube and on the faces of the bb shell and head tube.
