so my Cane Creek headset has a spring betwen the top cap and 'star nut' (although this is more like a hope head doctor), never seen this before, anyone know if this is just specific to carbon steerer tubes? i assume its to stop the star nut equivalent from pulling back up the tube?

Never seen one - might it be to keep the "expandy" bit of the plug under some tension & hold it in the right position until you actually tension the top-cap. I can't believe it'll offer enough force to stop it pulling back up

Never seen one before, but it belongs to the expander ( http://www.vpcomponents.com/product/m-7xl/ ), rather than the headset. It's there to prevent it from just spinning until it expands enough to bite into the steerer.
