Headsets are so bloody complicated!
I've got a tapered 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 head tube on my Synapse but a straight 1 1/8 fork that I want to fit.
Does anyone know of a reducer? Also, does it fit into the frame so that I can fit a standard headset or does it shim the steerer tube so that it uses a 1 1/4 bottom headset cup?
Hope do a crown racer adapter for straight steerers.
If you have a headset fitted for a tapered fork steerer then just bang on the crown race adapter
Thanks cloudnine, I'll take a look.
One of my Specializeds had a reducer fitted to the frame to take a 1 1/8 straight fork. I'm sure other people make them too.
The only thing that bothered me was that the fork crown of the 1 1/8 forks looked too small next to the 1 1/4 head tube. So I bought some tapered forks to match. Hence the "had"... 😳
I am only find a 1.5 to 1 1/8 fitting, I don't suppose you've got a link handy have you?
@sundayjumper I don't suppose you'd like to send me the reducer from you Speshy would you? There'd be money in it for you. Mmmmmm money!
Norco make a crown race reducer. I fitted one to Teen 2's defy to upgrade the forks.
Yep. On my Grapil I run 1/18 forks and they have a larger than normal crown race and bog standard tapered bearings in the head set.

I guess it is a bit more versatile thane the hope adaptor in that it makes the switch to tapered forks very simple
just use the hope reducer suggested. fit the appropriate lower cup to your frame, either internal or external as you desire. then when you buy new ( tapered ) forks you just smack them in to your frame without the reducer. doesn't get much more simple than that.
check out the hope tech doc. i'm sure they will have sold lots of mixer headsets just on the back of the quality of their documentation of them.

Isn't the Synapse a Cannondale road bike? If so the Hope reducer is not what you want, and tbh I've no clue about the Dark Side.
Kraken - sorry, I was tired when I posted and didn't really twig about the sizes, even though I said 1 1/4 I meant 1 1/2 🙄
A very quick Google finds one of THESE though which I suspect is exactly what you need. And is out of stock ! Might be worth trying local Cannondale dealer or Cannondale UK to see if they have them ?

MPART are very good.
The Specialized ones are Cane Creek, we had two and they worked a treat. They were what Specialized were issuing with replacement frames when they moved from straight head tubes to tapered. It looks like an oversized washer.
I hope I've just ordered the correct shim from UK Bike Store here
