I've just got some rigid forks the commuter. So took the old Manitou Sx forks off. The steerer tube fits in Ok but for some reason the cartridge bearing and the crown race seem too big for the top of the fork (base of steerer)

It's an AHEADSET off a GT Tequesta 98

er... you need a new headset...

thanks Reggie but could you explain why?

Its loppy? It's the wrong type of fork for that headset? It's the wrong size? Parts missing??

your headset does look a bit old but it should fit. Are you sure you have all the bits of the old forks and putting everything back on in the right order.

I am used to cartridge bearing headsets but I assume you have some sort of cone which the caged bearings run on - i think I can see the top one and the bottom one is laid out on the floor?

edit: it also looks like you have the cone part on the top the wrong way round.

actually I think you have the bearings the wrong way too as the balls normally run against the frame cups.

Cheers i'll look into that tomorrow. The headset is old but worked fine, im building my old gt into a commuter. The thing i noticed is the last piece (crown race) doesnt sit on the fork. Unless ive done it wrong

"doesn't sit on the fork" ❓ you need to press fit it on.

what are the 3 parts that are lying on the floor?

It looks like you've messed up the orientation and order of the parts.

that part sitting against the fork legs looks like a seal not the crown race.

*sees pic*

OK both ball races are the wrong way up as is the upper crown, and you've missed the crown race out.

Just found the instructions below online, I'm not sure how much they relate to my headset seen as thought it was mentioned to be old.

I have no problem with the Top nut or cap. I now know that the ballbearings need to have the ball tops facing the top and bottom cups (which are already installed)

I believe 3rd one in top line in my pic above is the "COVE"
The 2nd one in on the top line is the "CONE"
4th one in on the bottom is "top cap"

After that I've lost it from my picture so need to take a look again when I get in. Can anyone figure it out just from my pic (above) and the PDF (below)
