Right, this has been driving me crazy and i'm after some thoughts as to how to stop it...
Transition Sentinel with FSA Xtreme Pro headset and one up tapped fork steerer (Fox 36) to pre-load it all together.
I've been getting really bad play in the headset, initially I thought it might be from the fork, but I think ive narrowed it down to the headset as if I disassemble it all and tighten it up nicely it stops. BUT only for the first trail I ride, then its back again as bad as ever...
A few things i think I can rule out.
- OneUp system - its great, 4th bike i've used it on and has been flawless for the past year.
- Bearings feel fresh (only 18 months old and seem to spin freely.
- No spacers or anything missing in the setup.
- plenty of gap between top-cap and top of fork steerer so its not bottoming out on that.
My gut feel is its the bottom of the headset, so thinking to just try a new lower bearing to start with (and maybe replace the crown race to make sure that interface is nicely fitting?)
Any other thoughts???
I'd go with bearings first - could just have play in the bearings, and as lower bearing's usually get hammered, start there.
