first time removing headset cups and I don't seem to be able to remove the bearings from the cups of my semiintegrated headset.

The upper bearings look like they might have rusted and so I've squirtd with WD40 which seems to release more rust. I need to replace the upper bearings (the bottom seem OK) but they are stuck in the cup. Should I be able to get the bearing race out of the cup despite the rust and if so how would I go about that? I've tried WD40 and applying heat but nothing really seemed to make much difference though I problally could have tried for longer or should I just be looking at replacing the top cup and bearing race together?

To confirm the cups are not in the frame currently and I've not yet tried to remove the bottom bearing race from tem the lower cup. I was hoping to be able to press the lower cup in without removng the race but is that a bad idea?

Thanks
James

Depends on the headset, some have seperate cartridges, some look like cartridges, but are part of the cup. Have a close look to see whether there's a joint where the outside of the bearing's likely to be.

@coatsey I see, folk seem to be saying that the headset I have does not use replacable bearing cartridges (it's an acros fitted to a YT Izzo).

new cup and bearing it is for the top then by the sounds. Any idea how I can go about not completly screwigin up the requirements for order on new parts liek I have done with everything else recently?

Acros headset bearings are bonded or pressed into the cups and can't be replaced, the whole headset has to be replaced. Jeffsy owner, the headset is still usable ( just )but the bearings would've been replaced if it was a simple case of swapping them for new, like EVERY other bike I've ever owned

@pothead this does seem a bit disappointing, can I get away with just replacing the upper cup to begin with do you think?

The only reason not to, in my eyes anyway, would be the fact that the lower will more than likely need to be replaced in the near future and I'd personally do them both at the same time (I'd actually get a shop/mechanic to do it to be honest) to save the hassle of stripping the bike down again. Bearings I can manage myself, getting cups out of a carbon frame I doubt I'd trust myself to not damage something
