Hello,
Before/as I order some rigid forks with a straight 1 1/8 steerer to use in a 44mm headtube, can someone advise on the preferred headset set up to do this? Which Cane Creek bits will I need? Or Hope if necessary?
I think I understand the principle is using a crown piece which effectively turns the bottom of the steerer into a 1.5 inch steerer, but when starting to look into the specific branded parts, it's all new to me. Advice appreciated.
I'm not sure I understand your predicament, 44mm is the standard ID for headtubes when fitting straight-steerer forks and ZS headsets. So you need ZS44/28.6 (Hope 2) at the top and ZS44/30 (Hope B) at the bottom.
The external bottom cup (EC44/40) is only needed when fitting a tapered steerer.
Predicament is I just hadn't looked into it so though I'd ask here first - had previously combined used standard 1 1/8th headtubes with 1 1/8th steerers and tapered steerers with a 44mm headtube but not 1 1/8th in a 44mm headtube with zero stack stuff. Thanks though! Assume Cane Creek zs44 will do same job?
As above, but consider whether you want the additional height of an external lower cup as well as the option for tapered later with a different crown race.
Some frames are assuming that extra 10mm or so in the published geometry.
Cane creek would be my least preferred option. I would stick to hope, gusset, or fsa.
There are in fact two ways of doing it - ZS upper and lower as above (and yes Cane Creek equivalent will work fine) or alternatively as you suggest, use an EC44 lower and a crown race adapter. This will give a slightly taller front end by a few mm and a marginally slacker head angle.
Assume Cane Creek zs44 will do same job?
Yes, they are the ones who standardized this naming convention in the first place. Something like their 40-series will work, or any other ZS44 for 1 1/8 headset, for that matter.
an external lower cup as well as the option for tapered later with a different crown race.
The external cup looks like a bodge, even with a bulkier suspension fork. I prefer not to use it unless it is necessary.
Ah, Yak you're saying there are 2 choices (1) a zero stack 44 headset which reduces to 1 1/8th 'inside' the lower cup,
or
(2) a zs44 top cup with an external lower cup, as one would use with a tapered fork, with a crown reducer on the fork to effectively make it tapered?
Cheers
Yes. So more height/slacker head angle/future options v the very neat and lower zs option.
Choices!
Cheers y'all.
One final thing - check the cup insert depth on your headtube.
Nothing ruins the momentum of a bike build like finding you can't seat the cups. Ahem... 🙂
