My current headset is dead from Yorkshire mud,
Has anyone updated the headset on a canyon nerve 2016 Alu (medium) to hope
Looking st the techspec some of the details show but
Not the full shis number
Thanks in advance
It's not entirely clear from that parts diagram but it looks to me like it's a fairly standard tapered zero-stack (ZS44/56) headset. The use of the code '40' might suggest current unit is possibly a Cane Creek (they have a 40 model using black oxide bearings).
You can just buy replacement Cane Creek cartridge bearings (either black oxide or upgrade to stainless) or go Hope if you like. For Hope you need either their full tapered headset kit (with includes the Hope topcap) or get the separate top/bottom assemblies (type 2 and type E).
thanks @vmgscot , i replied yesterday but mustnt have posted
gone ahead and ordered the hope pick n mix £50 on winstanley,
hopefully being a local firm they have produced a headset that can cope with the pennines/peaks.
i guess the american brands are more used to dust. i'm not overly impressed with the cane creek on other bikes
thanks for clarifying kit needed
You should just be able to slot the right Hope sealed bearing into your existing headset cups, which would work out cheaper and a lot less hassle in terms of removing and fitting cups/crown races etc.
I've just done this for the lower bearing on a CC 40 headset. Works fine. It may be that only the lower bearing needs swapping.
Whatever you do viz bearings, before you fit do the old trick of carefully lifting the seals out the cartridge and plugging extra good quality grease in then pop seals back in (even for Hope). Extends the life - especially useful for the lower bearing.
