You know, like IS or EC or ZS
I've an 1 1/4" semi integrated tapered headset and i need to know what its model designation is . Is it ZS44 ?, because if I google that it keeps showing my crown races for 1.5"
Or is it ZS42 ?. I just cant get a definitive answer.
TBH I've been going round in circles all morning. No matter what I google, just using the term "tapered" brings up 1 1/8"-1.5" but even then it doesnt seem to matter what designation number i look at, it seems to change and just keeps bringing up something different each time. I'm getting extremely *** off with it.
Google has provided me with EC44,EC49,IS42/44/47 and ZS42/44/54/58 all from googling the same bloody question. I hate this big business google, instead of giving you the answer to a simple question, it tries to sell you something it thinks you might need 🙄
.
I need the LBS to order me an M-part crown race adaptor, but M-part wants a designation number, and I just cannot track that down. It's just all too confusing.
And the LBS isn't really helping. I even left the lower cup with them, but after phoning yesterday they're asking me what the m-part model number is -Which Is Why I *** Left It With Them In The First Place !!!
.
So Im hoping someone here with say 'Oh right, thats such and such'. And I can skip off, buy the correct part and all will be well with the world once more.
The crown race is determined by two things… the fork steerer and the lower headset bearing… not the headtube.
I think you need to search the SHIS designation. If you search for the Hope headset explainer, they have a illustrated chart showing the different types. Here;

Right ok.
The frame and headset are 1 1/4" tapered. the new fork is 1 1/8" straight.
I need a crown race that will suit the 1 1/4"outside diameter, but have an internal diameter of 30mm as 1 1/8" steerer crown races have an inside diameter of 30mm.
M-part make this(Pic), but they do a range for different outside diameters, but with the 30mm inside diameter. I just need to find out which one because thats the part that M-part say it suits(Says it on the package)

Can't you email M-Part? They'd know wouldn't they?

I expect they would. But they'd ask what the headset is, or its size rather. Pretty much as with the LBS.
I thought it would be easy for the lbs to id the headset for me. Theres so many and this isnt exactly my trade, and its a no name headset, so i dont even have any info on it or even a name.
I've even suggested to the lbs that if theres probs, fitting a new better quality HS like a cane creek, where we know all the numbers and can order the correct crown race. So im not adverse to spending money with them for the HS, fitting, crown race part buy in, fitting etc.
I just want to get the bike up and running.
Right; a bit of googling and I think it's IS47, but you might want to double check that.
.
Maybe this...

...but would need to know what headset & bearing it is to be sure.
I've used the Hope headset adapter to run straight forks in a tapered steerer. It fits on the forks then you just use all the bearing parts, including the crown race, from the tapered headset. That was 1.5" though, do they do one that fits?

I used this Park Tool reference page
Oh thanks for that, that was very handy and informative. Though im pretty sure its a semi integrated. The headset has a lip on it, whereas the integrated is just a bearing in the frame.
.
I took a measurement of the internal bore diameter of the headtube and its 49.8mm(on my cheap caliper, so 49.7mm is 1 1/2" which is more confusing.
Pic of headtube. sorry about the quality. its the professional photographers day off.

I’ve used the Hope headset adapter to run straight forks in a tapered steerer.
I have a spare one of those... but it's for a bigger bearing/headset... ie a onepointfive not a onepointtwofive... I don't think they made one similar for 1.25>1.125
If it turns out it is the right size.. shout and I can send it.
Edit - wrong thing
Hope Type 'D' bottom headset or any headset bottom assembly in ZS49/30 to make a 1 1/8" straight steerer fork fit a 49mm headtube
So the only semi-integrated (zero stack) that's 1"1/2 would be ZS49 then? as per @mike83 above
Looks like it's probably a ZS49/33 that the OP has and is looking for a conversion crown race for.
Dumping it and fitting a ZS49/30, like the Hope D, is a way to go without having the current headset cup & lower bearing to look at.
What's the frame?
I find this a useful beginners guide.

OK Right, thats sounding better. Buy the Hope type D stepdown, fit that and that way theres no running about trying to work out what crown race conversion adaptor for whatever fits the inside diameter.
I shall order Hope lower headset type D stepdown cup HSCDS. And probably a standard crown race as its probably not going to come with one. Lets hope thats correct and i dont need a special version
.
I think the problem is the headtube lower is 1.5 " and the company adapted it to fit 1 1/4", using a fork that has an 1 1/8" steerer with an adapted crown race fork mounts for 1 1/4"(The fork crown race has a ring on it going from 1 1/8" to 1 1/4") Dear God what a bloody palava
I tell you this has been so confusing its no wonder I've been in a head spin. Butt Im so happy everyone has contributed to at least work out something that will get the bike up and running.
Now lets hope the electrical system is fully operational and i get out and be done, and if it isnt the damn thing is going into the cellar till the ending of the world.
.
Thanks again everyone 🙂
eesssh, sounds like a proper 'mare. Glad you're on the way to getting it sorted. 👍
