I am resurrecting an old Scott Aspect Hardtail (originally from around 2007-09) to build up for my 11 year old daughter. The bike has been in bits in the back of two garages for several years and as such has lost most of the parts, including the headset etc.

Took it into my local Edinburgh bike shop today to ask for advice about what headset it needed ... The mechanic ummed and ahhd and said he would need it booking in, along with the fork. The semi-integrated headset cups would need removing before they could size up for a replacement headset and would also need to measure the base of the steerer for the crown race. The talk was of all sorts of different standards and sizes, whereas I'd assumed it wouldn't have been as complicated as that??

The frame originally had (I think) either loose headset bearings or bearings in a cage, then an assortment of seals, washers etc. Fork is a 1 1/8th straight steerer.

I've booked it in for them to do the work, but actually I'd quite like to do it myself. Have fitted headsets before so am competent enough assuming I have the right parts. But seems like the range of possible headset standards and sizes is a bit of a minefield ... Is it, or am I being fobbed off?

Is there any way of finding out what I need and doing it myself?

Lists the Scott Aspect so should give you an answer.  If you're not sure of the age just try a few years/models to check if they changed it

I found the hope info sheet quite informative.
