Struggling to fit the top centering collar in the annulus the fork steerer and top bearing.
It's a hope 7J combo.

Do I
*Hit it harder
*File a bit of the inside off
*File a leading edge into the collar
*Buy another headset and try the collar from that
*Give up and take to the LBS
*Give up find a new hobby

Do you mean the 'conical compression ring' ?

If so yes to try a different one - you say it's a Hope and they can be bought separately for a few £.

I had a Hope headset where one just wouldn't fit - sent it back to Hope who stated there was nothing wrong with it but sent it back along with a new one as a good will gesture, so they said. Funny how the new one fit perfectly (as well as one from another headset) but the one that 'had nothing wrong with it' didn't ! It was clearly out of tolerance, too tight on the fork steerer so over expanding and not seating in the bearing.
