Replacing the headset on a Specialized Tricross.
The original caged ball bearings outer race pressed in to the head tube, which is 41mm ID with a 45 degree seat.
From what I've read, that means it's an integrated headset.

However, the Hope chart shows their integrated headset as having a square edged seat, not angled.

FSA show their integrated headset with an angled seat, which looks right, except that the top seat is only 3mm from the top of the head tube. Mine's about 8mm, same as the bottom.

I'm confused now.
Which headset do I want with a 41mm OD, top & bottom, 28.6mm top ID & 30.0mm bottom ID, angled seats set 8mm below the head tube ends ?

see my recent thread including link to supplier in Leeds http://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/headset-bearing-question-what-size-and-where

One shop in my fruitless search suggested that my bearing was v similar to those used by spesh FWIW.

As per my thread why is its so ****ing complicated to buy a headset now. I've just ordered what I think is the right one but I'm not 100% certain.

Specialized sometimes use Campy style headset bearings for their intergrated 1 1/8th headsets that are 41.9mm

Call an Specialized Concept Store as they normally go the extra mile to help.

A bit more research and measuring and I am even more confused.
Every diagram I have looked at gives the dimensions based on the OD of the bearings.
However, mine looks a bit like a conventional cup, except that it fits down inside the head tube, not on top of it, and it's the lower, narrower part of the cup that is the press fit part.

Looking at this picture you can see it's the 37.1mm lower part, with worn paint, that presses in. The upper 41mm part doesn't appear to have been contacting the frame as it has still got paint on it.

I spoke to the guy at the new LBS in Bewdley in the Wyre Forest yesterday and he was confident he could sort it, so I'll take the bits in today for him to match.
Failing that, I think the nearest Specialized dealers are Pearce at Ludlow or Worcester Cycle Centre.

I can sort of accept the lack of standardisation on bikes, after all, I'm a mechanic and I wouldn't expect a Volvo steering box to fit a Scania, but it would be helpful if Specialized put a fraction of the effort they spend on lawyers trying to stop independent bike shop owners using the name Roubaix, on putting proper specifications on their bikes on their web site.

Might be stating the bleeding obvious, but have you emailed Specialized to ask? 😉

No, but I just searched on their site and found out that Stourport Specialist Cycles is a Specialized dealer and that's only a slight diversion on my commute.

Thanks timba, that first link covers it.
Trouble is, I bought the bike second hand and I'm not sure what year it is.

So that's six different headsets used on the same model bike over seven years. 🙄

I've left the old one with Stourport Specialist Cycles now. Hopefully he can identify it.

I had similar problem with my tricross. Eventually got this http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/token-integrated-headset/rp-prod38688

It fits though needs extra spacer under top cap to tighten properly

That's an IS41/28.6 l IS41/30, which I would have thought was right for my frame too, it's just the way the cups on mine extend in to the head tube made me think Specialized used something unique.

Sorry I couldn't help more. Mine's a 2010, there's a barcode label under the toptube. FWIW mine has a Cane Creek headset as well
