You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
So, took a bit of a spill a couple of weeks ago - freehub slipped at full sprint, OTB, gravel rash up one arm, bruised ribs and hip - but I didn't think I hit my head much at all. Helmet not cracked, etc.
Four days after it I was due on a long-haul flight for work and I pretty much freaked out at the airport and couldn't get on the plane (I have issues with flying anyway but have always been able to control it). Other half has noticed me having trouble getting sentences out, struggling to find words, not remembering stuff - more than I normally would anyway!
Just wondered if anyone has experienced anything similar? I certainly didn't think I had any sort of concussion, no headaches or nausea, or anything like that. Not been to the doc's about it as I hadn't thought it warranted it tbh!
Go the the Dr. NOW!
Maybe you hit your head harder than you think but can't remember.

This doesn't sound good.
Agreed see a Dr. immediately.
I hit post too soon there (blimmin' iPad).
Effects from head injuries can present days after the event. You probably don't have anything to worry about but, on the other hand, do you want to risk it?
My brother had similar symptoms and a similar timeline after a bang playing rugby. He had a headache immediately afterwards. 36 hours later he said he felt 'like he'd had a couple of pints'.
The Dr sent him for a scan immediately where he was given the all clear. The Dr did say though that it's one of those situations where she'd rather see 1,000's of people who are fine than miss the one guy who 'toughs it out'.
Go today!
Get a scan urgently.
I hit my head/helmet. No damage to the helmet too. It could be a bleed.
Could be a clot, mini stroke, speech issues are a common symptom although more slurred than anything. The brain can sustain deceleration injuries even a helmet. The point of the helmet is it breaks up absorbing some of the impact, reducing the rate of deceleration. Get medical advice asap.
When I had a head injury a few years ago, spent an overnight in hospital having MRI etc being stuck on repeat asking same 3 q's and losing a days memories. You need to see a docs as my symptoms, after being able to get out of the loop, included not getting sentences out etc. Mine was caused by a swelling of the brain, nearly needed drilling but luckily not... My wife was also told that if banged my head again in the next few weeks could be curtains.
Heads are funny things, mine was easy to spot as helmet was mullered numerous impacts and punctures from tree stumps, rocks etc
Could just be a mild concussion but needs checking out. I still have issues when tired but a lot better, it can take time.

I struggle with key dates. Weirdly my sons birthday born AFTER the event.
either there's a clue in your user name or you need to see someone medical who can carry out an examination and refer you as necessary.

I've been like that for years!
I'd pop down the doc's though.
Pop along to a walk in centre or minor injuries.
Dysphasia is one sign of a bleed or indeed concussion.
I received a minor brain injury over three years ago. At the time I was in hospital I did such a good job of appearing normal that they didn't even bother giving me a head scan.
Pretty soon after I had trouble with short term memory, stringing sentences together and using the right words. Also became irritable, sensitive to noise and suffered an amplified surprise response, jumping out of my skin at the least unexpected things.
Despite the wounds, I felt fine in myself, but I moved to a more demanding job and it was pretty clear that I was having problems with what are called the executive functions.
I couldn't plan, was incredibly forgetful, handled stress badly and got tired very quickly.
Since then, if you met me, you wouldn't know I was any different than I am, but even now, I'm not the same person. I'm continuously improving with small gains and it doesn't affect my daily life, but I know I'm not performing at the top end as well as I used to.
Moral of this story is get it checked out!
go to the doctors, for goodness sake
Not like you need to pay (we aren't in the USA) and you will not be 'bothering them'. Go and see a bloody doctor.
Cheers guys - phoned 111 and they advised getting it checked out so going to pop along this afternoon 🙂
So people with similar circumstances telling you to get it checked out along with at least one medical professional on the thread saying the same and you still rang for advice?
Thats the way of STW 😆
Yup, pretty much! I mean, where would we be if we took advice from people on the internet..? 😉
In all seriousness, only really phoned 111 to find out whether I should go to GP, minor injuries or A&E.
Update - A&E referred to Minor Injuries, got checked over, doc reckons mild post-concussion so nothing to really worry about. Have instructions to go to GP and see about an MRI if it doesn't improve over the next couple of weeks.

Thought i'd share my recent experience as I got a bit worried when the doctor wasn't all that reassuring. Hope it improves for you like mine recently has (not out of the woods yet).
Almost 3 weeks ago I got knocked out at BPW and took the big yellow taxi to A&E. I was out for ~3minutes and broke my carbon Troy Lee. After the 1st hour (vomiting, headache) I thought I was OK apart from some knackered ribs and bruises/grazes, although I did get vertigo when moving in bed (i put it down to the rib pain).
36hrs later at work I became constantly lightheaded/dizzy, generally felt stupid, headache like i'd had a couple pints too many the night before, my eyes were hard to focus on things and I became incredibly sensitive to sound. Doctor said it was normal for a head injury and basically prescribed me a MTFU (exaggeration) and stay off the bike. I went to the Hospital a week later to get a CT scan when they were (supposedly) quiet but left after 2hrs as the noise in there was making my head spin. At least I got a diagnosis in triage which was post-concussion syndrome.
Now, most of the "out of it" sensation has gone, I sometimes get dizzy during the day however I have yet to exert myself or walk more than 100m.
Weird thing head injuries; I had no headache before all the other symptoms except after the initial crash.
personally if you do have insurance or not tbh either way I would still insist on just taking the MRI now... all this waiting over a couple of weeks does not seem right..
having trouble getting sentences out, struggling to find words, not remembering stuffI've been like that for years!
When I was looking for something the other week I forgot what it was I was looking for. I quickly realised i've always done that. However, just yesterday my work's canteen phoned me up to say I had written my name down for the item I had taken for lunch. That's a new one.
mild post-concussion so nothing to really worry about
Just be aware that another concussion before this one fully clears can be fatal. Have a look at second impact syndrome and take it easy for a while.
Cheers guys - phoned 111 and they advised getting it checked out so going to pop along this afternoon
Blimey they didn't send a R1 Ambulance? Well there's a first.
I didn't really take the second impact thing seriously, so of course 2 wks later going stir crazy decided to ride my bike and fell over sideways virtually straight away. Seems I had no balance... Didn't even hit my head again but the impact didn't help recovery so I would strongly suggest taking it easy, I was supposed to not ride for a few months. Luckily the initial crash smacked my hand as I supposedly wouldn't go to hospital as thought I was ok apart from my hand. Funny things brains.
4 yrs later fittest I've ever been as life is too short not too enjoy it, as that could been it for me quite easily. Try and push for an MRI, as no one really knows how bad or not until they can look. They do have a scale they use for concussion but that if I remember correctly was something they used at the time, think I was fairly high !
