[Closed] Having trouble fitting shifter to brake lever - missing something!

I'm trying to fit an (older) M8000 XT shifter to a M615 Deore Lever. Both obtained 2nd hand.

I feel like I'm missing something, plus it's all a bit confusing regarding the spec A/B/II etc, so any help much appreciated....

My lever currently has the nut/bolt fitted - I believe this is Spec B:

And this is my shifter:

So, I'm a bit confised as to how the shifter could fit on the lever. The shifter won't sit snuggly on the lever because it cannot fit over the current nut/bolt that's in it. It could just nevertheless screw into the shifter on into bolt but it would wobble as it would be held apart from the lever.

If I remove the nut/bolt from the lever, then then the shifter sits snugly and needs something to fasten it properly. I only have the nut/bolt that came with the shifter, which is:

...but this doesn't seem right as the nut can't recess in anywhere and so protrudes on the inside of the lever clamp and then the nut can't reach it...

I feel like what I need is almost a shorter version of the nut/bolt set up in my first picture that doesn't protrude or something like that!!

Hopefully I've explained that ok!

So basically I feel like I must be missing something obvious or be needing some kind of other nut/bolt on the lever. Any help with pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!!

This may or may not help.

https://www.bikeradar.com/features/shimano-i-spec-a-b-and-ii-mounts-explained/

Looks to me like you've an ispec ii shifter.
Possibly an a or b lever.
The two are not compatible.

My experience is limited to thinking its a silly idea that shimano made more silly by adding multiple non compatible variations to though.
I've never actually handled an I spec shifter.

Yeah a B lever doesn’t go with a II shifter, unfortunately.
You should be able to find a B shifter on ebay and sell yours, not losing much, except the time it takes.
Why they don’t make bar clamps so you can mix and match is beyond me.

This is so irritating!

The funny thing is that it literally does fit snuggly, it just seems like someone forgot to make the right retaining nut!!!!

So, after too much reading, my options appear to be:

1 Drill into my brake lever so I can get a recessed m5 (i think) nut there that pops out and to which I can then attach what I have. Low cost, but danger of messing something up more!
2 Make the missing nut - someone seems to have done that here: https://www.mtbr.com/threads/xt-i-spec-ii-shifter-with-i-spec-b-brakes-solution.996480/ but I don't understand from what they made that nut as I can't find a "spec a nut"?
3 Buy a separate clamp for to which this can attach - cost something like £10-£17 depending on quality
4 Buy a new spec b top housing for the bracket (around £17)
5 Buy a new shifter, sell my old one (lose a bit in postage/fees - maybe £10 hopefully). But that actually needs me to bother selling something which I don't always do!

Ideally, I would quite like to do (2) but I simply don't understand where that nut came from.
Otherwise (4) or (5) is looking like a reasonable bet.

Ah, just remembered I had a 10 spd iSpec B shifter in the garage! Looks like you’re sorted though. 👍

Shimano really messed up with their direct mount system

Pure bollocks isn’t it. Like they’re under the impression that either people only buy complete bikes, or always buy shifters and brakes at the same time.

@mrbigglesworth Looks like you have an iSpec II shifter with a Hope Tech 3 adaptor fitted to it.

That's precisely what they want. It's an entirely created problem and while it might have faded from popular memory, there was a time when shifters had their own bar clamp integrated. The trade off for those extra few grams being almost infinitely adjustable gear lever position.

I guess it's one of those completely insoluble problems now though...
