My day of riding at BMCC was cut short last weekend because I'm basically a massive idiot. Every time I've been to BMCC I've taken that route to the left shown in the video, this time there was a diversion and it completely disoriented me at a crucial trail split so I did what any logical person would do...went straight down the middle!

On another note, I'm upgrading my GoPro Hero4/Zhiyun Rider-M to a DJI Osmo/FeiyuTech WG2X which will give me a fully waterproof gimbal stabilised filming setup. So I can continue filming in the wetter months this year!

Ouch!

Scuffs have all healed up now, think I'm nursing what is probably a cracked rib though...

I hope the signs ok!!

Fortunately they are only buried a few inches so they go down without too much of a fight, luckily for me!

I wouldn’t get either of those. The gimbal is shit and the FOV, IQ and in camera processing on the dji is not up to GoPro standards.

Well done that man. There's a red/black split further up that I always **** up, just, not usually with my face

Ooft!

Was that filmed using your "GoPro Hero4/Zhiyun Rider-M"?

The footage was really good quality

Black Mountains Cycle Centre in Wales (but only just). Really good grass roots type venue, doesn't have the frills of BPW but the trails more than make up for it.

Okay so I'm in a quandary here...because while I could quite happily go for the Hero 7 instead, the reason I'm looking at the WG2X in particular is because it allows the camera to be mounted the correct way up so the mic isn't next to the tilt motor.

I can put a Hero 7 in my current gimbal but A) It's not waterproof and B) You have to mount the camera upside down with the mic next to the tilt motor which makes the audio unusable!

The Hero 7 is waterproof mate, up to 10m if I remember correctly.

I have the WG2X. Makes noise, vibrates and it isn't stable on jumps. I use a chin mount with a hero 7 black. I think it gives a better perspective and it also means the camera points where you look.

They really are, BMCC is my most visted UK bike park for a reason!

It is indeed, my comment was written in a confusing way though. I meant my gimbal isn't waterproof, so it seems silly to spend loads on a waterproof camera when the gimbal can't get wet!

Not a glowing report then! By contrast my Rider-M actually performs very well, maybe I'll just look into getting a longer mounting plate machined so I can flip the camera.

Chin mount looks an interesting prospect though as the ability to turn with your head would be nice. Plus it cancels out most of that weird rotational hesitation the Hero 7 suffers from.

Does the audio come from the Hero 7 too? Does it not make breathing too loud compared to tyre noise?

Also is that McTrail Rider I see using the same setup in the photo?

Yeah and Ben Cathro (also with a chin cam).

Audio from Gopro and would depend how hard you breath I suppose. Never noticed it as being an issue.

Are you sure a chin mount is a good idea for the OP?

Oi! haha You never know, maybe it will act as an extra later of protection for my jaw. Or I might end up with a GoPro embedded in my face...

Wow, awesome video (apart from the end)

You rode that like I think I ride everything, when in truth, I’m a slow, wobbly, mincing wreck.

👍

As somebody that's ever had a go-pro but enjoys watching the vids, for me having a stabilised image has to be about making it watchable rather than completely smooth - a bit of bumpiness helps give an impression of speed that you don't get (you can replace it to some degree if you get your bars etc. in shot).
I mean I don't want full on top gear style wobbly quick cutting shots or anything, just something a bit closer to being there.

Great video - you were doing well right up to the signpost.

I also like your commentary: "uuuh f*ck". Any you checked your bike was OK before you checked yourself - good man.

Great video and you looked like you were enjoying yourself - hope you’re ok.

That’s a brilliant example of target fixation - where you stare at something and that’s where you end up going. Happens a lot with piste skiers and lift uprights, and unfortunately summmer motorcyclists (where it can be fatal).

Fair play you were hitting those trails hard.

I wish I could ride half as fast as that !!

Have to say I was impressed with the stability of the footage but surprised to see that you were using the Rider-M. I've never got it looking as good as that, wondered if you have stabilization in the camera on as well? I can never seem to get the settings right, it always seems to lag behind cornering so it looks more like it's panning round the corner rather than following it. Maybe fast swooping trails and full suspension help though too 🙂

Those trails look superb.

First time we went on our annual wales trip, we had a spare day so booked into BMCC on the offchance. Now, it's probably the main reason we're going back in august. It is just ridiculously good

Is it not a bit hard compared to say bpw?

It was indeed, to be honest after looking into it more I'm thinking of sticking with this setup for now and then seeing what the Hero 8 has to offer in September.

Have to say I was impressed with the stability of the footage but surprised to see that you were using the Rider-M. I’ve never got it looking as good as that, wondered if you have stabilization in the camera on as well?

Nope, the Hero 4 doesn't even have stabilisation so it's all from the gimbal!

Now, it’s probably the main reason we’re going back in august. It is just ridiculously good

Same here, I really like the fast uplift turnaround and the convenience of having the car park 10m away from the pickup point. Makes for a really hassle free experience.

Is it not a bit hard compared to say bpw?

Hard as in the difficulty of the trails? I mean there's less trails overall than BPW, so there's less easy options, but there are still a few blue trails that are really good fun and some of the reds are pretty manageable.

The way the trails all link together means you can kind of make your own trail as you go down which is pretty cool.
