Hi - I went to use my Thule rack yesterday with a car that runs a 13 pin plug with an adaptor from 7 pins.
we've previously used one of these adaptors on a trailer and had no problems. Yesterday, I had no joy. Not sure if the adaptor was rubbish and a Thule one would be better.
But I thought I'd ask if anyone has changed the plus themselves and if so how hard was it.
Cheers
The Thule adaptor works well, I've used it in the past.
I've changed 7 pin plugs on the caravam, as long as you have the instructions and you're ok with screwdrivers and wire strippers that's easy enough. Can't see that a 13 pin plug would be much harder
Yes I did it, because adapters are a ball-ache. It was pretty simple on a bike rack, just find the pin diagrams online and wire like to like. More complicated on a caravan because the fridge and permanent live are done slightly differently.
I find the adapters just about OK - though one diedby getting twisted compared to the correct orientation. replaced it with a cheap no-brand one and it seems to work fine, might get a spare in case same thung happens again and they are like £5 i think
We used an adapter on an almost daily basis for 3 years. Never had any problems.
Adapters are fine and cheap.
note, I use an adapter to connect my twin 7-plug caravan to my 13 plug car. It works fine
Not changed one, but put new wiring on my atera rack a while ago to a new 13 pin connector. Also swapped the reversing and fog lights over at the same time. Think there’s just one extra wire to hook up with 13 pin, if you have reversing lights in the Thule rack (which will be unconnected with an existing 7 pin).
Take your time, record the current wiring carefully, there’s plenty of pin out diagrams for both connectors online. Most 7pin plugs I’ve had apart have been corroded to bits. So it might be worthwhile shearing the cable a few centimetres away from it and starting afresh.
The adaptors are a pain, buy a 13 pin plug. Try and get a quality one that comes with the green cover. The trick to them is to twist them all the way until they disconnect, do not pull at all.
