Went out for road ride today caught up with a guy just starting to do fiddlers elbow climb between Gloucester and Stroud. So overtook him and he stayed behind so when we reached top of climb he past me then we started working together.Had to stop at lights in Painswick so had brief chat. Then we worked together till Stroud he went back towards Slad me over Rodborough Common.
He said thanks for the ride i said cheers.Never saw his face dont even know what make of bike he was on.Yet we rode hard together pointing out dodgy bits on the road when one was leading.
Just seems funny 😀
Only time i bump into other roadies on the road am treated as an obstical to get round. Prob cause im on early90's steel peugeot (brown) with down tube shifters and wearing mtb gear. That and being quite slow, 16mph average is good for me.
Sounds good though, bloke who rides to work sometime has this on the ride in.
Frequently - mostly during Sportives.

Not likely to be the bike, it'll be the mtb gear!
Picked one up today - blew him off my wheel (or he stopped for a picnic, more likely)
Once caught a young lad (16-18ish) just as a flat stretch turned upwards. He clearly assumed I was a riding god and pulled in behind me. I tried to live up to his impression and it nearly killed me - was dead within a mile. He came past and kept looking to see if I was on his wheel 😳
Also once picked up a guy on a TT bike who wheelsucked me for about a mile and a half then shot past me so I sped up to pull in behind and he stopped nearly dead and said "this is where I live". Now he may have been offering me sex but I suspect intead that he was just an arse
So no, no happy stories to recount at all
Bro-mantic )
We invited a 55-60ish year old French guy to take a break from the headwind in our 5-man paceline heading down the road to Nice last summer. When he got to the front he proceeded to nail us all and his next few turns on the front until he turned off toward Menton were desperate attempts from us to save some pride .. we were about to finish 3 big days from Geneva and were tired, but even so, the guy was strong.
Done it on the Dunwich Dynamo once, picked up a group of 3 partway through the first half, they carried on when I pulled in to the feed stop. Never saw their faces in the dark, they were just voices in the night....
It's happened a couple of times on my commutes home I've found myself working with a stranger for a bit.
Normally a stronger rider who allows me to draft for a bit and let's you do a stint up front, it useful holding someone's back wheel and even watching out for a bit of technique...
If I'm hanging and not managing the pace (often the case on the commute home after a long day) I don't mind getting dropped after a bit, it's not a race but people need to get on so best not to delay them.
He seem to be struggling abit on the climb but was obviously not just going at a steady pace then i past him so he sat on fair do"s.I like to climb in front. On the flat he was very strong i am crap at holding wheels tend to ease of then the gap appears never done a road race only MTB/X.There was a fair head wind.GOOD though got to Stroud quick.
Pick up a chap in North Weald Essex. Swapped places all the way through Epping and beyond at a fair lick, then parted ways. An enjoyable 20 mins, no idea who he was but he was wearing a club shirt of which I can't remember the club.
One of those fuuny cycling things 😆
Happens to me loads whilst out on the road bike, I'm crap at being the one in front though, I've never got quite the right idea of how hard to push it so usually go too hard then get overtaken and dropped. I'll happily sit on someones wheel, or let them sit on mine if they catch up without me knowing and take a breather before overtaking and carrying on where I'll usually sit on theirs for a few miles until I'm blown, but useless at rotating.
what's the off-road equivalent? 'cause I've experienced that often enough - tagging onto a ride or having a tag-along. Always nice to ride with others.
I don't like it at all.
Sometimes do training loops round Regent's Park and strangers always try to get on your wheel and take a tow, some make moves to take a turn on the front but the majority seem to want a lift up the hill or into a headwind and then blast past when it goes downhill or with a tailwind.
Really narks me off so I tend to weave if someone latches on and they tend to get the message. Some just don't give up though so you have to sit up and interrupt your pace - they normally get some verbal abuse.
Loads of times, but especially on sportives. IMHO it should be encouraged, as i've come to the conclusion that the only thing that is genuinely better about road riding, (apart from avoiding the slop at the mo) is working together to go faster!
Had it a few times; regarding getting blanked by roadies when in MTB gear it happens all the time to me, blokes I know from club rides literally stare right through me if I'm out on my mountain bike, a bit odd really.
Some guy drafted me yesterday coming down from Manchester Airport on Styal Road. He overtook me on the flat and dropped me then I overtook him at the bottom of the hill (I mountain bike so I'm faster downhill right? 😉 ).
Think he drafted me for having the cheek to over take him, is that in the Rules?
yeah, I go fast downhill too(I [s]mountain bike[/s] am portly so I'm faster downhill right? 😉 )
Regularly whilst commuting. Discovered a chap with several Strava KOMs on my commute starts 200 yards down the road from me, and finishes a similar distance away! Only bumped into him once, but it's the only time I've managed a 20mph door to door average in London!
mostly during Sportives
Funny.
The only Sportive I ever did I really struggled to latch on/keep anyone
