I havent seen the program but a couple of people had in my office.

I was told first thing that i should be ashamed and shouldn’t ride a bike. this wasnt a joke!

I’d ride my bike around the office crashing in to their chairs. ****ing half wits.

Edit - whilst wearing my scourge of the streets t-shirt obviously

From the start on my recording through Sky...

Is that a straight-up list of all the advertisers during "scourge"? Cheers for compiling it, I'm gonna write to them all and include channel 5.

It was on my Sky recording, I went through the whole lot. I don't know if everyone sees the same ads though, it may be area based or targeted by some other method

on satellite, I think there's only 1 Channel 5 channel

on freeview, it's probably by region

for other channels, they have several regional variations with totally different adverts in each (Channel 4 has about 5 regions on satellite, but doesn't do regional programming afaik, so must be purely for adverts)

doubt it'd have any effect

Can't have any less effect than not doing anything. 😉

Actually, thinking about it, would it be worth writing to advertisers who are big into cycling (so Halfords and HSBC for starters) encouraging them not to support C5?

Do companies actually choose what programmes to put their adverts into or do they just buy “slots”? Or is it a half way house of saying “we want our advert within “documentaries” or within “romantic comedies”?

Genunine question, I don’t know how it works but it’d be a tad strange if a Persil or Lidl or Vodafone had said “here’s our advert, please only screen it in the middle of rabidly anti-cycling shit”…

It's a mix.

The channels will sell advertising based on viewer numbers and demographics, they will have a very good idea who is watching what. Some of those slots will be sold directly to the big companies like Unilever and tesco who probably just buy a spread of everything as they're pretty universal, they just want viewing figures spread across demographics. Others will be bought by agencies who'll sell them on to smaller companies as bundles. So stanna stairlifts will buy a bundle that effectively guarantees them however may tens of thousands of over 65's for the minimum cost. Lastly you have very targeted stuff like sports betting during the football, or wiggle during the cycling where those slots are specifically bought.

Doesn't mean it's not worth complaining. If a company thinks it's an issue they'll ask for different slots and it wouldn't take much to make a program unprofitable, at least enough to stop it being re commissioned for a second episode.

RE advertiser pressure, may be worth looking up how Stop Funding Hate and Sleeping Giants operate.

HSBC for starters

Their logo appears with British Cycling’s at the end of the Chris Boardman response video I posted on pg2. Be very surprised if they knew their ad was being shown during the prog.
