Iv just bought and built up a new frame but my old 521 on bulbs are feeling a little tired and abit too heavy/over kill.

The same can be said for my brakes old saints

I look at the new shimano stuff and im not convinced brake wise but there new wheel sets look pretty good ?

Any thought whats the "in" brakes and wheels at the moment ?

Any thoughts?

521's on bulbs is quite a chunky wheelset, you could easily shed some weight but keep em tough with one of the hope hoop options such as pro2's on stans flow rims or go a bit lighter and try a 719 rim or something like that. my mate has the xt wheels and really rates them, ive no experience of them myself though. theres not really many bad brakes out there, just choose the ones that balance weight and performance in a way you feel happy with. i have recently used formula, avid and hope but ended up staying with hope because of maintenance issues and breakages for the other two.

Iv never been too keen on avids their padless fitting drives me nuts.

Iv always been a shimano man but iv seen too many XT's leaking from the master

521's on Bulbs are not what I would call a chunky wheelset. About 200g for the rear wheel heavier than a Hope Pro 2 on Mavic 719. Bit stronger I would reckon.

I've got a Bulb on D321 rear wheel. Don't worry about the weight (not that it's that heavy) but then don't worry about my rear wheel full stop as it's stronger than pretty much anything out there.

If you want light brakes that work, then Magura Marta would be hard to beat.

Older Hope hubs seem to be far better built than the new ones. Always hear of bearings dying and cassettes cutting into the freehub. Sell them to me cheap if you want rid of them!

Service them, new bearings and run lighter tyres! Bulbs 521's are great wheels.

Look up goodbikedeals on ebay got my Magura forks off him and he does very cheap brake deals.
