So I decided to get some bigger tyres for my new hardtail and I got maxxis assagei 2.5 on the front and rekon 2.6 on the rear (both 27.5) for a really good price. My dad then asks if I've looked at my IW for my current rims (Mavic EN421) and looks like they are too small. What to do?
I could try and fit them anyway? Or try and swap *stealth ad* for maybe something smaller?
Feeling a bit stupid. Advice welcome. TIA.
If it came with 21mm ID rims to start with can it even take tyres that wide anyway? What bike is it?
It might change the shape of the tyre and therefore the grip especially cornering. However as long as you have enough clearance at the seatstay and chainstay you should be ok. I have been running 2.25 on 17mm for years with no issues.
@lawman91 it was just a set of wheels. It is currently running 2.1s but stupidly I didn't check the charts before buying some new tires.
21mm Id (if that’s what you’ve got) is a bit narrow for that width really. That said the 25mm internal rims I have should be too narrow for the 2.6” Forekaster I have on the back of my ht. Also running a 2.6” Magic Mary on the front with the same size inner rim width. I think Schwalbe have a different view on internal rim width to
Maxxis though.
So maybe mount them up (without sealant) and see what the shape looks like.
Ok thanks all. If anyone is looking to swap tires (or maybe even wheels as I can post) feel free to PM me.
Thank you!
I used to run a 2.35 Magic Mary on a 21mm rim and found it fine, although it said 2.35 it measured much bigger. I'd give it a go if I were you, it might not be ideal but doesn't mean it won't work.
@dc1988 yes I've got a pair of 26x2.35 shwalbes on my other bike with 21 mm rims and they seem fine.
I think the max recommended is 2.3-2.4
Just checked on the rim and it says it's ok up to 2.7
I guess I will just have to find out tomorrow with some tubeless action.
