My local road club has announced they are going to start group ‘social’ rides again (following social distancing)
To me that just seams daft and dangerous.
6 people taking up at least 18 metres of road, trying to shout socially at each other.
It’s just going to annoy other road users
What are your local clubs doing ?
🔵🔴 Further 📢 - Club Cycling Activity still suspended until 4th July by BC 🔵🔴
To advise as per BC guidance it is still club policy that cycling solo or in pairs is only permitted until further notice.
This is despite Government lockdown easing from 1st June in terms of increased group meetups (upto 6 people) . We will seek clarity on this from our governing body British Cycling and advise in due course, however as stated previously the club would be given two weeks notice of any changes to the suspension.
If you choose to go out riding in a group of more than 2 which included club members we would kindly ask you all refrain from wearing club kit. This would look like a club group ride and damage the reputation of the club.
This is what our club says.
I'm not a member of any road club but from my 'gravel' ride on Sunday its clear that a few round here have started up again. Didn't see any of them observing any kind of distancing though...
My club is threatening to start on Sunday but I won't be there. Quite apart from the issues Dunc mentions above, some of the members are frankly idiots and I couldn't trust them to have kept themselves safe over lockdown. They are even talking about restarting pub night .
Our clubs clear on following BC and SC guidance.
So solos and pairs. And even then discouraging club kit in anything other than as solo ride.
Club group rides have been done on zwift through out and working really well.
Tuesday is interval session , Wednesday is the race and Sunday morning is a club 100 km ride
Following BC guidance, so no group rides.
Running TTs and races on Zwift, and also publishing three routes each week that take in local landmarks. People are riding these, submitting photos and there's a weekly prize for all who enter - a bit like a scavenger hunt.
To be honest, I'd be surprised if a group of folk travelling at say 20 mph, all within touching distance as is usual were under any great risk, but it's the perception of how it looks that would attract scorn.
And there's enough scorn for cyclists as it is.
Thanks I’ve forwarded guidance to the club. I’m interested to see if I get a nasty response or thanks for highlighting something they didn’t know.
If it's a formal club it is most likely affiliated to BC, in which case going against their guidance is pretty foolhardy.
As above, our club is BC affiliated so following the 4th July guidance. There's a been a few going out in pairs the last couple of weeks
Going by the large groups of boulderers, walkers, mtber's and roadies I saw in the peak at the weekend, noone seems to GAF now anyway.
Following the BC guidance as well so no group rides yet. I agree with Nobeer, not good for perceptions and now should be a time all clubs are looking to avoid doing anything that damages the image of cycling or cyclists.
All club rides are off for now, we've just had an email with the updated SC guidance. People are getting out riding but mainly solo or pairs (from what I can tell, pairs is very rare unless it is families out riding together).
Haven't seen anything about not wearing club kit, but a number of the club have gotten creative and doing a lot of stuff on Zwift.
Some of the junior riders have been putting in some amazing efforts over the last few weeks - so my hope of being able to stay with them until the end of the car park has been well and truly shot down!
Our club is definitely not restarting formal group rides and, indeed, had a bit of a Facebook ruck from the weekend when a small number of riders were seen daring to ride together by an over-zealous government informer. In fact, the club riders were a parent with two kids and another parent with one kid who happened to have caught up with one another and were having a catch-up when a larger group of older men decided to silently sit on their wheel. You can imagine the frothing at the mouth that this caused!
FWIW, I've no objections to riding out with my friends at the moment and consider the risk from cycling outdoors, however close, to be low to non-existent especially as I know that the people I ride with are otherwise taking lockdown seriously and not sneaking down the park when noone is looking. That said, I won't be using my club kit to do so for a wee while... 😉
Our club is adhering to BC guidelines, so no rides yet. We were also asked to not wear club kit when riding through April and May after social media criticism when riders were seen riding - within the rules - what was seen as "too far" from home.
I do know a local club planning on starting socially distanced group rides this week - does the OP live in Derby?
We're sticking with the BC guidance here (and a treasure hunt, and Zwift stuff for those that zwifterbate).
A few of the fast guys have started knocking out sub 5h centuries on their solo rides so the first club runs back are going to be interesting/painful!
My club is starting this weekend, 6 max, but I’m not sure if they’ve just missed the BC guidance.
I’m not going anyway; I don’t fancy riding in a stream of someone else’s breath just yet.
No chance but they've been doing some cool challenges on Strava, different to the usual "smash out xx hours or yy mileage". Things that can appeal to people outside the smashy-smashy brigade like drawing Strava art or exploration based ones.
Agree about the "social distancing 6-people" thing, that's just ridiculous to try and manage.
Judging by the roads round here, I'm not convinced some of them stopped for more than a couple of weeks to be honest, they just took the club kit off.
No, BC guidelines here too, and there's been a couple of general warnings/reminders sent out Facebook about not meeting up and wearing club kit. It seems that a couple of couples passed each other and got reported for group riding. Bit unlucky.
When we told we could wear club kit from 1st June it was full of reminders about solo rides, obeying the rules of the road, no snot rockets, and avoid stopping to chat to clubmates
