Fun fact - I teach the (actually dunno - ceo, MD, something senior)'s daughter A level Design. She is designing/making a utility trailer to accompany one of their eclectic bikes for her coursework. I'm currently working the angles...there has to be something in it for me the school. I We clearly need a bike here for me to commute to work on us to prototype with.

That's a lot of money for a utility bike !

My Kona Bike is similar and cost me £170 just over ten years ago,

Only if the vanmoof says "it looks like you're trying to ride a bike, would you like me to help you with that?"

ebike tax isn't it! And to be fair some nice subtle design touches.

I thought it was pretty reasonable for an e-bike though...

Given it’s one of them e-bicycles, it probably does.

That's a polite way of putting it.

I had a Whyte Prest 4, loved it, sort of like I imagine parents of ugly offspring feel.

How did I guess the bike in the OP would be a Van Moof 😀 ? They do love a pointless tube or two.

Hush with the pointless tubes jibes now - they are ace! (Am I doing enough to merit a freebie to look after for the rest of the year do you think?.

I'm not suggesting that it's not a great bike (good reviews & awards & some neat touches) I just thought that it was the oddest bike I'd seen.

Clearly there are more to be seen!

You have got to love the quirky bike and the leftfield bike designer. One of my favourite books is "Cyclepedia" - A tour of iconic bicycle designs. Every bike nerd should own a copy.

https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Cyclepedia-Tour-Iconic-Bicycle-Designs/dp/050029397X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2F97YJA0WFSNR&keywords=cyclepedia&qid=1658909521&sprefix=cyclepedia%2Caps%2C111&sr=8-1

I wonder how Mike Burrows is doing these days - he must be getting on a bit.

edit - he's 79. So when I met him in '97 and thought he was as old as the hills, he was only just older than I am now. Damn, I'm old.

That van moof is imo really nice design. Integrated everything very clean lines. You do realise the headlamp is in that bit of tube infront of the headtube. Integrated lock as well iirc

Imagine a utility bike that you can lr3eave in a city and no one can nick your lights?

Van moof also do a theft recovery scheme. All the bikes have trackers and if yours is nicked they send the boys round to reclaim it

A radically compact frame, with extra-agile handling for quick getaways.

Perhaps it's aimed at bank robbers 😕

I like the Van Moof, it's one of the bikes I considered when choosing my Ebike. Lots of interesting features. Only probs for me was too small a battery, and the limited 'one size fits all'

Glen Longland, who is riding that reverse tandem above, did the after dinner speach at our club awards one year. He's a bloody mad man, (in the good way) probably the best speaker we had in the last few years.

Told this story about riding a penny farthing in a street carnival, and falling off it twice in about 20 feet. 🤣

I guess they're more stable the faster you go.

Interesting fact, that back-to-front tandem stoker is Nev Stroud who was my design and technology teacher at Ferndown Upper school in the early 90's. Great teacher, great bloke, slightly mad. I believe they were trying to set some kind of record by following his porsche with a big fairing on it down the A35 (may not be true, that was the story I remember).
