How did you get on?

I nipped down today with the bike I use to commute due to a stuck shifter. The LBS guy quickly said "this is a decent bike, this isn't what the scheme is intended for". It's a 5 year old cyclocross bike, probably worth ~£400.

Now I can't find anything on the CyclingUK website that says there is a limit on the condition/specification/value of your bike, but I'm happy to be corrected.
All I can find is a statement saying: "Whether you’ve got an old bike in the shed that needs attention – or the one you’re riding requires some care – you can access a quality mechanic to get your bike repaired, safe and back in use."

As a keyworker only able to get a part-time contract and without a sniff of usual overtime since COVID kicked in back in March, a repair up to £50 would be a massive help just now - is it unreasonable for me to ask for a repair? I feel a bit conflicted on this, with his attitude making me feel guilty for asking.
Whilst I'm not poverty stricken, I'm just about treading water at the moment with no sign of things improving. And whilst my bike isn't a shit heap, it's hardly a super spec racing bike - it allows me to go anywhere/do anything, including getting to and from work.

Interested to hear any opinions on this one.

It depends on how the shop want to interpret this part of the FAQs shops were given

Who is it for?
The scheme is targeted at people who have a cycle but it needs some maintenance to get it back in use. It is intended to reach people who feel they need financial support at the moment, as the costs of bike repairs can be a barrier to cycling. It isn’t aimed at people who can already afford to get their bike maintained or repaired but we won’t be asking for bike shops/mechanics to judge customer eligibility or their ability to pay

My LBS trued the wheels on my Stump jumper, no questions asked.

That's interesting, bigyan.

but we won’t be asking for bike shops/mechanics to judge customer eligibility or their ability to pay

Unfortunately this was the case. It is somewhat embarrassing having to stand there in a shop, explaining your financial situation.
