Not tried that combo, but 10 speed 105 shifters work fine with a 9 speed xtr rear mech on my CX bike. If that's any use...

Hang on, 10 speed shifters work with 9 speed XTR? I suppose that makes sense as the mech doesn't know how many speeds it has....interesting

M980 won't work with road shifters, you'll need to use a 9spd mtb mech.

Yep. The space between high and low gears is indentical on 9 and 10 speed. But apparently new 10 speed mtb rear mechs have a different cable pull rate so don't work with road 10 speed systems.

Yep - I run Ultegra 6700 shifters and a 9-speed XT rear mech on a 10 speed XT cassette.

Yep, 9 speed MTB rear mech required for 10 speed road STIs.
