Trek Fuel Ex 29. Rides absolutely great.
What would happen if I put a 27.5 rear wheel in and flipped the flip chip to high?
Ive got nothing that would fit just to try it so it would cost actual money to get a wheel.
Going to the Alps in the summer on it so was thinking mullet setup would help on the steep stuff. Or might just ruin everything.
Anyone done this? Did you die?
How often do you buzz your arse on the tyre? As otherwise, given your using the flip chip to put the geometry back to where it should be, whats the point?
Why bother?
arse is buzzed a few times, it reminds me to get my weight forward.
Good point about the flip chip. So if i left the flip chip on low, then everything a bit slacker.
“What would happen if I put a 27.5 rear wheel in and flipped the flip chip to high?”
On most 29ers, going from 29 in low to mullet in high is about the same geometry change as going from 29 in high to 29 in low. So if the head angle and BB height were 64.5 and 340mm in low, and 65 and 346 in high it’ll be about 64 and 334 in high+mullet. (Same with the changes in reach and stack and seat angle).
That might help you figure out if it’s the step change you want.
to actually answer your question...
I tried it on my Nukeproof Reactor as I have a wheel. It accelerated quicker, gearing was higher and in the DH single track it was slightly better/more fun. The biggest downside was the lower bottom bracket, more pedal strikes on technical climbing and singletrack when you're out of the saddle. It's now got the 29" wheel back in but if I was going to the Alps I would maybe consider it again but I am a bit of a short arse. If you've got a mate with a spare wheel give it a go, can't hurt
I did it with a Remedy 29- I didn't really want to like it if I'm honest but it turned out really well, it was always a little high with 29er wheels, especially as I like biggish tyres and had a longer fork than stock in it, so on a 2.6 650b rear it was maybe marginally low but not problematic. I swapped to shorter cranks and really enjoyed it. It was never about wheel/tyre clearance though, I never had any issues with that in full 29er mode. I think ultimately the only benefit I got was the lowering
(but I did think that if I did the mega again I might prefer it, it'd be great for cowardly glacier tyre-sitting!)
Done it to my Cotic RocketMax Gen 1. Rides nice at 150mm front, 140mm rear. Cy has recommended an angleset to take 1.5deg off which I’ll do next service which will apparently take it fairly close to the geometry of a Jeht.
