Bikeless for 5 months now and getting desperate. Looking seriously at a Pivot Mach 5.5. I can't get a demo.
Doing some research on the MTBR forum, lots of folks mention the suspension is very active and leads to noticeable pedal bob on climbs. Do any owners here experience the same?
Last 6 or so bikes have been VPP so I'm wondering if it could be a noticeable issue when VPP is the yardstick. TIA.
I don’t have one but I’ve ridden a Pivots I’ve also ridden VPP - Intense & Santa Cruz.
DW IMHO is a better & smoother platform than VPP. Yes, it’s active but it’s so smooth you hardly notice it. Less feedback than VPP so if you like feedback then stick with the VPP. No issues going up or down & a very smooth, bottomless feel to it’s stroke - unlike VPP where you know exactly where you are in the travel. Pedal bob is not a issue I’ve noticed.
Personally I prefer DW to VPP but Pivot frames are £££..
Thanks. That's exactly the sort of info I was hoping for!
I agree about the £££. I've been offered a good deal on a used one and that's the only reason I am thinking of buying it.
SC and Intense here too. Found the new JS tuned better than the SC VPP for climbing but a lot more skittish over repeated small to mid size hits. Felt more like it was skipping over the top than tracking the terrain.
Mach 5.7 here, so basically the same thing with smaller wheels...!
the suspension is active but as said not intrusive. I have a cane creek inline air on it. That’s a great shock...!!!
i find the bearings in the lower linkage don’t last that long, easy enough to change with the right tools.
if you’ve been offered a good deal you won’t regret it.
Just replaced a Mach6 with a transition sentinel.
The suspension on the transition isn’t nearly as ‘good’ as on the pivot, but the geo is a million miles better..
This is for a 6’5” guy, so you could size up, if your not at the end of the scale?
I realise that it’s not the same bikes, but I guess I’m saying that the pivot just didn’t work for me, as a big guy, and imho geo > suspension...
Ymmv
I owned a Pivot Mach 5.7 for a bit, was quick bike but sold it as it was too small was a medium. Rode a 429 a very quick bike which sold me on 29ers so bought a Smuggler as better Geometry.
I have a mach 5.5 and never noticed any bob when climbing. It gives more rear grip than anything else I've ever ridden tbh. I live in the pennines so lots of steep climbing on my trails. On the descents with the 160 fork up front it blows me away every time with the amount of punishment it can take and stay composed. It often leaves me thinking how did I get away with that, but that's why I love it.:)
I’ve got one (429sl) , mrs is getting one (s/h Mach 4), 4 mates have got them (3 Mach 6’s and a 5.5)
We all comment on how well they pedal, but still cope plenty well enough on downs. They are very well made and have lots of features that you look at and think ‘good idea that...’
I’d def have another, over a Santa Cruz anyway (I’ve had/ridden loads of vpp bikes)
I don't think they suffer from chain-driven pedal-bob but if you've a tendency to move a lot when pedalling hard then it'll move with you
All issues with my 429sl are pilot caused. Bike is way more capable than me and seem to be designed by someone sensible in terms of changing bearings and tidy design features.
Most Pivots have insanely short reach, it's only recent ones that have started to remedy that. Most average medium frames had more reach than an XL Pivot. I'd make sure to test ride it first. Not surprised the 6'5" chap above didn't get on with his.
Thanks to everyone who has responded. Glad to see you're all loving your bikes!
I'm 6' 2" and going for an XL with a DPS rear shock. Hoping it will be more of a capable trail bike than an enduro lite machine.
I did look hard at a 429 but that super boost rear axle put me off and I think I probably do need a little more travel.
The new 29er Mach 4 is normal boost iirc. Pivot seem to be quietly dropping super boost now
I have had 5.5 since they came available, had 5.7 before that for 7 years.
Mechanically can’t fault either but in retrospect 5.7 geometry was not ideal for me due slack ST angle, but 5.5 has more modern geometry.
I have X2 shock, probably not any faster because of it but increase in control is noticeable over DPS.
I can only echo above comments re: DW vs VPP and their merits
Thanks to everyone. Good of you to take the time to reply. I think I will go for it if a deal can be done!
If you're anywhere near Malvern a mate has some demo Pivots (and Santa Cruz) in his shop.
Thanks stevied but not near Malvern

I wouldn't have thought so. When I get the chance I ride my mate's 429c and it is considerably faster than my 160/150 "big" bike on all terrains - particularly down Dumyat and the surrounding area. He's got a travel adjust 110-130mm fork on it (maybe X-fusion? I don't remember). I just leave it at 130 and it's a total monster. I'd have one in a heartbeat if I had the spare cash.
I'm selling my mach 5.7 if anyone is interested??
Hmmm. Just spotted the dropper post calculator on the Pivot website and took a measurement off my old Titus Motolite. Looks like I would have to run a 100mm dropper on an XL.
I’ve got a Mach 5.5 and it is just soooo good it makes me ride things I didn’t think I could. I thought geo is relatively contemporary now? I’ve got a large frame, reach is 460mm and I’m 5’10”. Perfect fit.
It’s just the best do it all bike. Too much fun! You will not regret it!
Large frame came with a 150mm dropper BTW

Yeah, they're more in line with the most recent ones, but the 2017 XL Mach 6 only had a 425 reach.
