Off to Asturias next week as pit crew on an historic rally. Got a couple of days while the lads do their recce so taking a bike over. This climb caught my eye, but it does sound brutal. Will be on the hardtail rather than a road bike so gearing is a bit better. Anyone done it?

Was going to carry on over the top and make a bit of a round tour taking in some offroad stuff if I can. Any tips much appreciated.
It's been used in the vuelta a couple of times so there will be some footage of it about. I've not ridden it but I watched the race and can't say it made me want to, that said if I was in the area, why not.
I’ve ridden it, hardest climb I’ve ever done and I have ridden a fair bit in the alps, dolomites, Pyrenees etc. People argue about which is tougher, angliru or zoncolan but for me it is definitely angliru. I did it without resting on 34-27 gearing but spent most of the second half stood up. A lower gear would have been better!
I guess MTBs gearing would be easier, but the geometry might make such a long steep climb hard work in other ways, particularly if it’s slack. GCN have a good video of them riding it.
Either way, if you are there anyway just ride it. You can always just turn round and roll back down if you decide you’ve had enough. I don’t recall any cafes or water on it by the way.
I rode it a few years ago.. One of the hardest things I have done on a bike.
34x28 gearing was too long ( 34x30 maybe?)... I did it on a misty morning , so the atmosphere was incredilble, especially when breaking through the cloudbase on the higher ramps.
Just park up at the bottom and go for it...up > down > done... nice cafe in Rosas.
Brutal
Well I did it today. It really is one hell of a climb. Started in 20 degree sunshine, last 500 metres of hieght in cloud, still patches of snow on top. Had a few photo stops on the way so no special times set, though I did ride it all. Passed 1 car! Did it on my cc hardtail with 1x11 36/46 gearing which worked well. Bottom for spinning on the 20% stuff and 2nd or 3rd for standing. Brakes took a hammering on the way down, though I did cut off at the 1000m contour and used gravel/off-road tracks from there down. All in all a very nice 2.5 hour jaunt.
Awesome, clearly you should have taken a marker pen with you to finish that sign!!!
I was up there for the 2017 Vuelta, rode it the day before, bloody hard!
On the day of the race, we were sat outside our camper van right by the stage, 7km from the top when a UCI official drove down and asked us if we'd be willing to take our van to the top as one of their medical control vans had broken down en-route. We agreed and there followed a terrifying 30 minute drive up the steepest and narrowest section of the climb dodging thousands angry spectators and bikes crawing up. We parked in the corner of the carpark and were treated to VIP hospitality and given 2 rucksacks full of goodies. Saw Contadors win and Froomes clinching of his Grand Tour slam, after the prizegiving Froome was taken into our van to provide his test and when he emerged, he stopped for a photo and chat with me.
