Has anyone else found they have been running surprisingly low pressures?

A few weeks ago I tried my friends Topeak digital tyre pressure gauge. It read surprisingly low pressures of 14 PSI front and 16 PSI rear. I assumed his gauge was shot - I believed my tyres were both at c30-35 PSI.

Today, bought myself a Pro (Shimano) digital gauge. Low and behold - my tyres are that low! Looks like my pump gauge is more accurate than I thought too.

*For reference I am running Magic Mary front and Hans Dampf rear 2.35 and 2.25 respectively. Both TLE Evo Snakeskin Trailstar. I don't tend to bottom tyres out on the rim and I like to think I am reasonably smooth.

The pressure reading on a gauge means nothing in the real world.
May as well give a reading in apples or oranges.
What counts is what works for you and repeatability.

I find over use of capitals in daily life reduces tyre pressure. Something to consider.

Same thing here. I tested it on the bus and compared it with amother gauge and it was spot on. I'm thinking the presta adaptor might be giving a false reading. My joblow track pump gauge reads higher

Glad it's not just me! I'm happy - in fact very happy with the way they feel. Lets face it that's the important thing - I feel they grip, don't wallow and protect the rim enough.

As a 15 stone fat biffa - I wasn't expecting my tyres to be that low!

I'm slowly getting some of my riding buddies to lower their tyre pressures, it does make quite a difference.. In answer to your Q.. Yep running about 15 in the front and 18-20 in the back.

Way back in the early-mid 90's I used to run about 55 PSI! Crazy really. I have been suggesting dropping pressures to a couple of people I ride with occasionally. Just didn't realise how low I really wanted them to go!

I set the fat bike up with 8psi rear and 6psi front a few weeks back. Riding the other evening it didn't feel quite right. Pulled out the gauge and sure enough; 5psi rear and 4psi front. No wonder it felt a bit funny. Let's hope it snows soon or I'll have to get the pump out 🙂

Depending on where I'll be riding, I have my tyres at quite low pressures. If I pump 'em up too hard I find myself bouncing off every rock!

I imagine you are a lot lighter than I, Vickypea!
