Has anyone change the battery on a Garmin Edge 1000?

..and did it work better?  The battery on my 7yr old Edge 1000 now only lasts 4-5 hours even when I'm doing all the tricks of staying away from the map screen, wifi off etc.  So I was thinking of replacing the battery and I have no technical issue with doing it but the reviews of the batteries seem mixed with half the people saying it didn't really improve battery life.  I've replaced the battery on my iPad once with one from iFixIt which is probably as close to genuine as you are likely to get aftermarket but even that only gave me around half the normal battery life which was disappointing

So, has anyone replaced their edge 1000 battery and if it worked well do you remember where you got the battery?

Thanks

Not had it done personally but this company popped up on another forum when discussing a similar topic. Will see if I can find the thread but the poster was very positive about the repair work done.

Not the 1000, but I did replace the battery on a 705. It was very easy and restored battery life to "as new". It was a while ago and I can't recall where I bought it, sorry.

Good to know thanks.  They aren't hugely expensive so it might be worth just giving it a shot given that it's close to not being useful any more

I did a few years ago, got a complete kit from eBay which included various tools.

It's pretty straightforward and definitely got the battery life back to roughly where it was. The only thing I didn't bother with was reconnecting the speaker as I always turn the beeps off, iirc it's the only non connector bit which means cutting a wire and soldering.

Excellent news thanks.  Think I'll give it a go.  Soldering the speaker cable is indeed to the only non connector bit but I'm fine with that

I have found replacing batteries is nearly always quite straightforward, cheap and a vast improvement.

Phones
Garmin watches
Power packs etc.

Along as a video exists on YouTube. Playing cards and acetone help with freeing glued in batteries.

I did, when the screen packed up on mine. Seemed silly to crack it open and not do that job at the same time.

I got both from eBay and each fit and worked brilliantly. But I do have a collection of tiny torx and mini screw drivers from fixing kids tablets/phones/xbox's etc

My 1000 is Trigger's Broom now, with the exception of the power switch cover which I can't find a replacement for. I'd say it's a pretty simple job with the right torx set.

Yeah the power key is a pain to replace, again I got one from eBay which was some 3d printed thing, it required a bit of hot glue as the button is part of the white plasticy/rubber thing that goes around the unit so you cut the old bit out and stick in a new section, works fine though.

For personal experience (ie) the last 2 days, the Garmin 1000 is very easy to swap parts out just have a t6 and t5 torx to hand and follow the on screen instructions via you tube 🙂

@stevedoc - did you change the battery and if so does it work better now?  I've got all the tools for doing it as I've done the switch before and changed batteries in a few other devices.  Was really just looking to see if people have had success with new batteries and which ones as the reviews of the makes I've found have been a little patchy.  At the moment I'm looking at a Cellonic from Subtel as possibly being the best option

No my explore 1000 is just being daft . The battery life was always around 12 hours or 8 if im following navigation routes. But Sunday I stripped it down to the bare minimun and alchol wiped the components ,Since then the garmin boots but i fear there is a problem with the start stop button and moisture damage from constant wet ride. Its no longer booting in to diagnostic mode and starts as normal. It just starts rides but then wont stop a ride.. daft thing .

Another in the "not a 1000, but did it myself" category...

Ageing battery in my 810 was barely holding any charge, became useless. Was ready to throw it in the bin when someone suggested a replacement battery kit for about £16 from Amazon...

Took 10mins to install, returned the 810 to as new battery wise! Job jobbed!

To close this out and answer my own question, I replaced the battery on my Edge 1000 and it took the battery life from 5 hours back up to 9-10 hours which is as much as I ever got out of it (including by switching off as much as possible on the device)

The battery make was CELLONIC and I bought it from Subtel for 10EUR plus 3 postage which seemed a bargain.

There were two problems during the installation which matched some of the complaints I saw online about the batteries not working but they were my problem and not the battery.  First off the Garmin only seemed to work while it was on charge and died immediatly afterwards.  That was the battery connection not being pressed fully in to place even though it looked like it was.

Second problem was the Garmin working but not charging.  That was the charging connector between the two halves of the case not being pushed fully back into place, again even though it looked like it was.

Anyway, absolutely worth doing and very easy if you have a soldering iron and the tiny torx screwdriver needed.  If you don't have a soldering iron then you can't reconnect the buzzer but I have that turned off all the time anyway so it wasn't strickly needed

Ive had loads of garmins over the years and lived them but the battery life was always terrible. I was never brave enough to replace the battery myself and sold them on for others to do.

On a coast to coast ride in day, all the Garmin users were on battery saving mode and we had to follow the wahoo users who had about 40% battery life left.

After that I sold my Garmin and bought a wahoo roam. That was years ago and the battery life is still as good now as the day I bought it.

If Garmin ever fix the battery issues I might be tempted to try them again.

I bought my Edge Explore in September 2021 - old Garmin died and I needed a new one quickly for a ride leading job. Initially, the battery was good, it did 10hr days with nav no problems. Now it barely lasts 6hrs, even when it's not running nav. Can extend it a bit using the battery saver mode bit that'll only push it out another 2hrs at most.

If I'm running nav, I need a battery pack with me for day-long rides.

Up to 16 hours from my Edge 530. I have the additional power pack but I've not used it yet.

Yep.  Newer devices seem much better but I still love the screen size of the 1000.  With that and an out front mount it works perfectly for my old eyes.
