Due to poor maintenance by me, my left Deore shifter has given up the ghost. The cable has pulled through the nylon holder that is moved by the shift levers. Is it possible to fix the damage with some kind of araldite/ liquid metal type thing? If not, has anyone else got any bright ideas? This is the second shifter I have broken in this way and I don't want to fork out for new ones.

Same thing happened to me with some Shimano Sora road levers. I wondered if there was a thimble type thing you could put over the cable nipple to make it bigger and hold in nylon holder but could not find any such invention on the market - does that give you any bright ideas?

I'd put it down to the fact that Deore and Sora are pretty cheap Shimano kit.

Tbh just buy a new shifter and change the cable more often.

I've never seen this happen and I've worked on many neglected bikes.

Your suggestion sounds sensible....with a little maintenance next time...

Al, on my Sora shifter I kept setting it up but when moving through the gears on the stand it would 'ping' and pull through each time. I started to wind fuse wire around it in order to try to shim it out but it would no work man. The white nylon cable holder was splayed out.

Not just Deore & Sora, the same thing happened on an SLX left shifter [which might say something about my maintenance schedule]. When I stripped this for a look the nipple retainer looked even flimsier than the Deore. I tried cutting down a plastic cable end cap to fit in the space but that didn't work. My next wheeze is to try some adhesive/liquid metal type thing but there is very little room to work in the shifter body. I am amazed so few people have had this problem given it has happened to me twice!

It suggests to me that excessive force on the lever is causing the problem. If so, I would hazard a guess that the cables are being run long after they should have been changed. Better maintenance would help.
