Hi all.

Got a bit of a problem with the Yari fork on my bike

Sag is set correct.

What is happening is that on trails with braking ruts or step downs my hands are occasionally being jolted off the bars which is slightly disconcerting.

I'm also getting a lot of arm pump and sore hands.

The fork feels plush but I'm also not getting full travel out of it either.

Before I start messing about do any of you have any suggestions please.

Thanks.
Steve.

P.S absolutely loving my ebike by the way. Wish I'd listened and got one earlier.

Typically, it's either just the limitations of the MoCo damper, or a lot if them have tight bushings that need honing to proper clearance.

That's called spiking and it's typical of the MoCo damper. You can have everything setup right but then the damper is uncapable of dealing with fast and/or repeated impacts. I had a Yari a couple of years ago with the MoCo, it was bad enough to get blurred vision when properly charging. Swapped for a Charger 2 damper, night and day difference

Ah now that is interesting as my friend has the same bike but the model up fitted with a lyrik and that was night and day difference.

Unless you’ve been unlucky with tight bushings, it’s just the moco damper. It’s quite plush over small stuff but over repeated big hits it spikes.

Only solution is a better damper. Choices are rip everything out the damping side of the fork and out in a charger 2.1 - either rct3 or rc2. Or leave the rebound rod in, take the plastic bit of moco stuff out and buy an aftermarket damper. Typically the Fast YariUp or the Novy parts splug are used. Night and day different at high speed.

I swapped the MoCo damper for a charger 2.1 for this very reason and the difference was massive. Good luck finding one in stock tho :-/

Would also say its probably the damper. Had Recons / Rebas in the past which all came fitted with MoCo dampers and I was never that impressed with them. My current bike has a Fox 34 with the Fit 4 damper and I would never go back to MoCo for anything other than sedate XC rides.

My Yari have been like that from day 1.

You either have overly soft or put up with them spiking on rougher terrain. It's the damper and no amount of faffing with tokens, air or oil weights fixes it.

Bike-discount are usually good for price + stock. Don't hang about ordering though what with Brexit!

I put a Charger 2.1 RC2 in my Yari recently. The fork has gone from spikey to silky. Well worth the expense.

Before I spend the money are there any negatives associated with doing the charger upgrade?

Does it only work for lighter riders etc

Also RC2 OR RCT3 ?

I have the splug in mine, well worth it but the hsc is only tuneable by novyoarts(they do it for free +postage) , which means sending back to France, which I couldn't be bothered with before brexits about to make things even slower & more expensive!

You lose the solid lockout that the moco damper has.

If you go rct3 them you have lsc and lsr damping adjustment, then a 3 position lsc lever. I’m open it has you normal lsc adjustment - then it has pedal / firm if it’s the same as my older rct3. So if you like to lock your fork that’s the best you’ll get on a charger.

As you’re on an ebike I’d suggest locking your fork is less useful tbh - so would go rc2. This gives you hsc and lsc plus lsr- so it’s more tuneable for feel. No easy lockout though.

Personally my rct3 charger I put in a Yari is decent - but the Pike I’ve just bought for my new hardtail is an RC2. The Rc2 wasn’t out when I got my rct3 (which is a charger 2 rather than 2.1).

I replaced my Yari stock damper with a YariUp aftermarket damper. Much better.

Paired with a coil spring on the other side, it’s a great fork now.

I modified my Moco on my Yari by re drilling the holes on the bottom of the damper to increase oil flow and put a lighter oil in. It made a big difference for me. I'm light at 58kg so it always felt over damped and never bottomed out. Now it feels much better. Still not as good as the Pike on my other bike but good enough to not need any money replacing the damper.

I had 2014 Pikes on my fs and then bought a 2016 ht with Yari. The Yari were crap compared to the Pike, get a charger damper.

I've got a 2.1 rc2 charger and C1 upgrade air shaft coming from Bike 24 for my Revelations after advice on here. Couldn't find cheaper anywhere else

https://www.bike24.com/search?searchTerm=Rc2+charger+2.1

Hopefully they will be here this week.

Since ordering managed to find a used one on Ebay which I bidded and won, No other bidders and a new set of Fox 36 Factory at less than half price. Some swapping about and will be moving on a set on after Christmas

The damper is likely the main cause, but removing any tokens might help.

Cheers all.

Ordered an RC2 from bike24

Will wait for it to come and swap it and the airshaft over that I've got too.

Surprised no one bided, it was up on Pinkbike before and the price kept being dropped, thought it was worth a bid, its going into some Pikes on the Levo SL

According to tracking my stuff from Bike 24 is out for delivery. Not bad from Germany.

The new 36s were the best buy, they are going on to Abigales Turbo Levo and the Revelations will be sold on

If that's a standard basic Charger RC coming out of the SL's Pike it'll be worth a few quid, I would be interested in that Tracey.

I put Charger 2.1 in my Revs, amazing upgrade, bought another Rev for my HT and already looking to upgrade the MoCo.

What was wrong with the MoCo for you just out of interest?

Most interesting thread. I love my Yaris, but i would love to try some 'better' ones one day that's for sure.

Moco was Spiky and tiring on repeated rough stuff when fast.

But after the upgrade it floats over this and is smoother and more supportive throughout too.

Brilliant, that is great to hear as that is exactly what is happening with my fork. I've lost the bars a couple of times due to the spiking.

Well you're basically upgrading your fork to Lyrik Ultimate now. You'll love it.

Rebuild it with SRAM Dynamic Seal Grease instead of SRAM butter for full buttery loveliness.

Thats the one - remember the first run on mine thinking "this is alright" followed immediately by "oooffffttt what the **** was that??" when it got to bigger hits

Will keep you in mind when its swapped out, how will I tell what charger is in the Pike.

First job is my Revelations and the 36s this week and then the Pikes probably after Christmas.

On a G170S the Yari felt incredibly harsh and nasty, my hands and forearms were suffering after anything with repeated fast hits, I only lasted 3 weeks before swapping it out. Swapping to the Charger 2 RCT3 made a vast difference, so much nicer.
Now I ride a YT Decoy that also has a Yari up front, I've only swapped to a bigger air spring as the damper doesn't feel like it's anything like as harsh and I feel no real need to change although it is tempting (from a shiny new toys perspective).

New Yari’s have a Charger in them now, so should feel a lot nicer.

What gets me is that I used to run a MoCo damper on my old (32mm) Boxxer Team then Boxxer World Cup and it never suffered from this. My OH still has an old MoCo Revelation and it doesn’t do it. Even my old MoCo Reba never did it. It’s like they’ve deliberately hobbled it to make it significantly worse than a Lyrik

Do they ?

I have a 2021 Whyte ebike and my Yari is definitely MoCo

Yari with a MoCo is not fit for purpose on 170 fork IMO. Wife has same bike but one level higher spec and it has a Lyrik. The difference is night and day.

My 2010 Pikes with MoCo are equally rubbish and that's only 130 travel with a coil spring.

Got a 100mm travel Manitou Minute with the ABS damping on my hardtail and that doesn't spike like the Yari or the Pike despite me having to have them more firmly sprung to cope with less travel.

Not all Yaris have that charger damper - just the Yari RC Charger. Not much info immediately available online about it and I think it might have been discontinued.

I’m not sure if this is like the revelation except charger / pike select or if it is actually a full charger damper just with minimal adjustments.

@Tracey, I think your Pike will have this Charger RC damper as shown on this thread
(sorry, I just cannot fathom how to host pics here!)
I think it's still open bath rather than a sealed unit that your fancy new RC2 2.1's are.
