I am known as the cyclist in the family, so naturally my son has asked me for some advice. He is looking for an E MTB that he can go riding on with a child seat for my grandson.

They live in Chesterfield, so plenty hilly with lots of good riding to be had locally. His budget is £2k max.

Any suggestions? My last hardtail was a Trek 8000 about 15 years ago, so very out of touch with what is available.

Also what is good in child seats for a 1 year old?

Thanks.

Is this for mountain biking, or getting about and transporting the kid?

If the later… then perhaps…

For a 1 year old i'd go for this https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/19612659/wee-ride-safe-front-baby-bike-seat-19612659 but they will probably fall asleep, might not be dropper friendly though

£2k gets you this https://www.paulscycles.co.uk/bikes/electric-bikes/raymon-trailray-140e-100-29-electric-mountain-bike-sand__13951

Back in my day child seats went behind the saddle over the back wheel, so thanks for highlighting that one.

And yes, it is for riding some trails as well as general transportation. So hardtail E MTB is what we are looking for.

hardtail EMTB's aren't very well received.  General consensus is the additional weight reduces the ability to be light on the bike as you usually would a hardtail..

So if any kind of trail riding is required i'd be all over that Raymon full sus vs any E hardtail

The (I think), most ongoing serviceable motors are Bosch, brose(specialised) and Yamaha (*not the giant SyncDrive versions) so what localish dealers to chesterfield do something with them. (Try google on levo hardtail that brings up similar and there were a few over just over 2k)

Prior to buying I’d look at child seats and make sure the bike frame will work with the bike seats you plan to use. (Eg I take my dropper post out and put in a rigid for the tag along)

If he hasn’t got power near bike a removable battery might help for charging.

As hes in chesterfield get to je James and buy what ever is in stock that fits the budget. Probs a spesh from them. They are excellent at bike sales and care there. Hit and miss on workshop.

Hardtail emtb is fine.  I have one.  Cube hybrid pro.  Its actually an mtb not a hybrid.

Fine for general off road riding

You need a separate thread for what is the best child seat

Once you have decided on the child seat you can look at what bike it will go on to

edit: I would also strongly recommend that whoever is riding the bike goes and test rides an emtb first. They weigh substantially, significantly more than an analogue bike at that price tag , making it harder to keep them upright. You need to be confident with the extra weight before putting a kid anywhere near one.

I had my son on an analogue bike. His weight had no impact on my ability to pedal the bike ie his weight . But getting a kid on to seat of an ebike may well be quite challenging!

Forgot to say the £2k is his cycle to work scheme limit, so the sale bike wouldn't have worked.

Found this - https://www.giant-bicycles.com/gb/fathom-eplus-2-2022

As it is being discounted by the manufacturer not the retailer he should be able to get C2W on it.

What do you reckon any good? I have a Giant E Gravel bike and I love it.
