You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi all. Any folks out there have good knowledge on if it's possible to transfer all components from a hardtail to a full suss frame? Both Cube.
I'm considering buying a new frame, but can't realy decide whether it's cost worthy. Any help would be appreciated.
Can't think of any concerns v the usual when swapping from any frame to another (seat tube/post, brake mount, cabling, headset etc).
Could you possibly elaborate on that point, buddy. I'm still a bit lost. What kind of cost would those changes incur?
Is the seatpost the same size?
Do you have the tools to remove the old headset cups, and insert them into the new frame?
Does the rear brake hose need to be separated from the caliper, to route through brake mounts (like through the swingarm) ?
Is the chain long enough, to cope with the extra stretch from the suspension movement?
Is the rear spacing for the wheel the same?
Do you have the tool required to remove/install the BB cups?
Is the BB shell the same width? Will you need more/less spacers?
Is the cable gear outer (both front and rear) continuous, or can you see the inner cable in sections?
Will the front mech fit on the new frame? Is it top or bottom pull?
Is the fork steerer tube long enough?
Will the headset fit (1.125" or 1.5"?)
(Quite a few questions you need to ask, before swapping frames...)
you will need a rear shock.
Xiphon. Ahhh, right, so it may be trickier than first thought. My ignorance will show here.
I'd need to do some homework on all those questions. I'd be looking to find out if it's at all possible, then looking into a suitable frame.
p.s. No, I don't have the tools needed either.
Swapping bits from your existing frame?
parts that are commonly different frame to frame:
front mech, seatpost, seatpost clamp, (less likely) bb, fork and headset type. Cable routing will usually be different so new cables needed.
I can't think of anything that would be different for a full suss frame.
To many here on STW, changing frames is a trivial task - but there are quite a few questions you need to ask!
These answers are great, chaps. Looks like I may just have to find a full set up and forget about the transferring of components.
It was wishful thinking on my part, but now it seems it'll be a no go.
Thanks.
Don't give up so easily!
Carefully research your *current* components (including measuring stuff), and compare it against your target purchase.
Might be lucky, and only need to alter one or two things.
Or you might realise your forks are too short (steerer tube)!
holmesgroove - building a bike up is good fun. It's quite frustrating the first time but before you know it you won't need your local bike shop and you'll wonder why it seemed so hard. Tool kits aren't really expensive (40 quid for a fairly complete set at Merlin) and although a workstand makes it easier, I built my first bike up without one as I'm sure many did.
A book would be good but the Park Tools website has loads of info too.
Thanks again. I've emailed Cube to see if they think it's possible. Perhaps the easy way for me to find out. I've seen a used full suss suitable for about £800, so would just need to make some cash from my Analog disc 2012, then it'd be a done deal. Defo something to consider here though. However, free time may be an issue here....
