The wife has decided she'd like a new hardtail to replace the pretty knackered one she's currently riding.

The Orange Clockwork is on offer at Rutland Cycles, which is local ish to us, she likes the look of it, the spec is decent for the reduced price and reach / top tube figures look about right.

So, am I missing any other decent offers? Needs to be 650b and in a small or a small medium and £1,250 max. Spotted the Bird but that's a more when you add a dropper and apparently it doesn't look as nice.

Alpkit/Sonder are selling off their demo and display fleet, and there were some decent bikes for sale in the Hathersage store.  (I think the Transmitter is their 650b) I got a very good deal on a 29er hardtail with barely a mark on it.

I looked at Sonder but can't see anything that's not 650+ or 29 unfortunately. Plus the other stipulation is it must be a new bike.

I just got the lower spec 6 (which comes with 29" wheels for larger sizes) and it's ace. The 7 is a much nicer spec - Revelations, SLX 1x11 and comes with a dropper post.

Thanks, the Marin looks good, will investigate further.

The Whyte will be to big (and yellow, don't ask) and the Diamondback a bit more XC than looking for.

I've the Marin from last year.

Note you can get last year's for £950.

It's light, longish, lowish, slackish. Nice light wheels, crap tyres come on it. Fab fork, nice SLX 2x11 and good dropper with poor switch. The bearings in hub and BB haven't lasted brilliantly, but then I could eat Hope bearings in a year or so also...

It feels a proper rocket ship at times compared to my steeper angled 26", yet I was quickly at home on it.

Sorry - looks like they're all gone. Not surprised when they were this price...

New one has nicer paint anyway...

The only downside to the Marin and the Orange are probably the Formula hubs they both have. They may last, they may not, it’s luck of the draw!

Just to say I specced the BirdZero TR (less long and slack than the Am Boost) and to get Revs / SLX 1x and a dropper it’s comes to £1491. So a bit more expensive, but you’re getting a decent DT Swiss wheelset / 3c Maxxis Tyres / it’ll come pre-setup tubeless.

Looks are personal - I think I agree that the clockwork looks great in the pictures. I think the retro paint on the Marin wouldn’t be for me. The Bird looks quite nice but maybe not as nice as the orange.

Have those Formula hubs on my Bossnut V2.

Bit over one year (intense) biking the Bossnut. Also in mud and crap and snow.

Well - the hubs are done. Front and rear. Bit of a shame.

Will go for DT 370 hubs now (I wait for the winter sale of actionsports.de and will go for FunWorks rims and DT370 hubs in the cheapest configuration then. But complete wheelset will be still around 0.2 k ...).

Regarding the hubs, I assume it'll be easy enough to chuck some new bearings in as and when needed so not to much of an issue?

Deedar is fugly and she won't entertain it, lol.

This was I was hoping for as well.

The Formula hubs I have: there are no "industrial ball bearings" in. They are cone designs. Cones not hardened? Completely shot after very short time (one year!).

No spare parts for the end customers...

Formula is really, really bad with that!

OEMs like to use Formula. And bike deals are sometimes good even with the Formula issue. But add in your calculation 0.2 k or so (minium) for later upgrade...
