My son is looking to buy his first bike at the ripe old age of 24.

He likes the look of these two:

Commencal Meta

https://www.commencal.com/uk/en/22METAHTAME.html

Orange Crush

https://www.sunsetmtb.co.uk/shop/index.php?product_id=12401

I think the orange looks a bit better, what do you think?

Any other contenders?

Ta

Saracen mantra they seem good value and well specced.

This is a bargain and a very useful bike

I like the canyon stoic too, short chainstays on a hardtail add a fun factor for me

I came here to say Stif Squatch. Mate of mine has one and they're really tidy.

Get the one you can fit stabilisers to. Or remove the cranks so he can scoot along!

This is rather timely as I'm looking to replace my old HT with a fun 29er.

Any real world reviews of the Stoic & Squatch out there??

They look pretty short tbh. TBH most of the bikes posted on this thread look like Halfords specials - the Commy Meta actually looks the best to me. Or the Orange

short? I’m 6” 2” and I think the XL is a great size. Squatch owner so bias, but I use it to ride from the door on boring stuff and take it to Exmoor on the steep and it’s easy doing anything big or small, mile munching or slinging laps downhill.

XL Squatch has a 500mm reach and 1252 wheelbase. Rear end is short but Id not call it short under any method 🤷‍♂️

The orange crush has SX drivetrain which is honestly not something I’d recommend to anyone, and is quite a bit more expensive than some of the alternatives suggested.

and agree on the squatch - not short at all? There’s a good review of one on here (STW) you could check out.

I've only had a short spin on my mate's Squatch but it felt good to me and not a million miles off my Pace RC627 which is ace and a great all rounder. Felt a little shorter than my bikes but that could be because of his set up. He runs plenty of spacers so that obviously has an effect.

Squatchs are only available in XL now and no more coming since Stif is closing down. Gutted because a medium would be perfect for me.

I have a Crush MX which I love. I did however replace the SRAM sx fairly quickly as it needed constant attention. Now I've XT on it and it just runs and runs.
