I've four bikes hung by their wheels from the garage roof, but alternated for space ie 2 hung by the front wheel, 2 hung by the back wheel, the pair with the lightest forks, RS SID, hung by the back wheel.

Is any fork damage likely to occur over time?

I remember there was a chap on here who had bought a set of Fulcrum Racing wheels for his road bike, just to use specifically for hanging the bike in the garage with.

If you also have more money than sense, you could get a new pair of forks to use for hanging with.

Otherwise, I wouldnt worry.

No chance, hanging them up is nothing compared to the hammering these things suffer at the hands of hamfisted riders!

(not insinuating that you are hamfisted)

They may stretch a bit as the bushings deform with gravity, but the additional 5 or 6mm or so of travel should be well within the frame's tolerances. I'd measure occasionally to make sure they've not got any longer than that though. If the forks have a lock-out, maybe use that to stop them stretching?

Agreed, unless you're at the upper limit already. Depends on the frame. Mine handled like a barge when I used to store like that. Tightened back up since the LBS sold me a long stand.

If storing your race bike over winter take it down occasionally and pump the forks to circulate the fluid, otherwise fine.

Use a longer hook that will reach the head tube. You will need something to prevent the front wheel from moving laterally.

I thought this was a mickey take, but now I'm not so sure...

[edit] if you're that worried hang it by the back wheel?
