I've had a Cyclus hanger alignment tool for many years. I find it incredibly useful when setting or resetting indexed shifting and it's always performed its duties well so I've had no need/desire to go for a more expensive version. Any shifting issues and I always check the hanger first before any other tests or tweaks, then I know where I'm starting from.
My technique for previous bikes (all aluminium frames) has been to test alignment at 12,3,6,9 o'clock positions, then use the tool as a lever to gently 'persuade' the hanger into alignment.
Having recently acquired my first carbon bike, I thought I'd give it a check over. The hanger was aligned but I'd be uncomfortable levering the aluminum hanger attached to the carbon frame!
I appreciate that the hanger is there to be the expendable part in event of an off. It's supposed to be softer and more pliable (therefore breakable) than the frame its attached to. But I still feel uncomfortable about it.
What technique(s) do others use to align hangers on their carbon frames?
Just use it like you normally do.
No different for me to be honest mate.
Nope, no difference here either.
It's a carbon frame, not polystyrene. Get on with it 🙂
Done loads - crack on
I'd be sure to leave the wheel in (why wouldn't you anyway) but otherwise, "crack" on ! 😉
Thanks for all the replies. Hopefully, it'll be a while before I need to tweak the hanger anyway.
