Hi,
questions regarding handlebar...
Most bars have some markings on the front of the bar for alignment. Often 'targeted' round a central marker, like -2,-1,0,1,2.
1. Is the 0 marker perpendicular to the rise?
2. do manufacturers intend that to be aligned with mid-point of stem face plate?
3. or aligned level, horizontal with the ground?
Thanks?
1 yes usually & 3 since the stem face plate angle isn't a constant, then adjust to taste.
cool, thanks
adjust to taste
This is the only thing that matters.
Running drops upside is frowned upon in some circles mind you..
“1. Is the 0 marker perpendicular to the rise?”
I think it varies from bar to bar. On my Fatbar Lites the 0 mark is near the top, and I’d assumed it lines up with the space between the faceplate and the stem body on a Renthal stem.
I'm amazed anyone takes any notice of these. Why wouldn't you just set it up so it feels right?

They make it easy to replicate the bar position so that you can guarantee that they will always be uncomfortable.
My bars are on upside down, put them where they work
"I’m amazed anyone takes any notice of these. Why wouldn’t you just set it up so it feels right?"
Why wouldn't you use them as a good starting point or as a reference if the bars have needed removing? Actually the last time I used the markers was to make a slight roll adjustment whilst keeping them centred. If you're really not sure how to adjust things you could bracket the positions like when you're struggling with suspension settings.

Isn't it confusing having the shifters on the opposite sides?

No, i just ride with my arms crossed.
Why wouldn’t you use them as a good starting point?
Because "tops roughly parallel with the ground" is a perfectly good starting point that doesn't rely on understanding what the markings on the bar are supposed to be relative to…?
I'm surprised no-one's yet been pedantic enough to point out that we're talking about pitch, not roll. If you can adjust roll then something's broken 😉

Exactly how do you get something of cylindrical cross-section to be parallel with a horizontal line?
@chief - well done taking on board that the earth isn't flat, but in fact it is a sphere, not a cylinder.
I like where this thread is heading. Well stocked up on snacks for the journey ahead.

I mean the bits that come forward to the hoods. My starting point is normallyg a continuous horizontal line from the tops, through that bit, to the hoods.
My nomenclature-fu is weak today. Sorry. Though at least I know that (a) the ground isn't a line, and (b) that it's perfectly possible for a cylinder to be parallel to a line 🙂
It's a sticker or lazer applied mark. I've never seen any tolerance or accuracy to how it's set up. And positional information should only be factored relative to the position it shows or the position it was before you moved it.

totally depends on like, how sideways you get when you shred?
That’s yaw opinion.
I have no axes to grind with you sir. Let's degree to disagree
If we do, then your post will have been pivotal in that.
hoods
Is that a roadie thing?
Haha… you know what, MTB bars hadn’t even crossed my mind 😂
Anyway, same applies. Stick yer hands on ‘em and rotate till comfy. Adjusting the angles of bars/levers is a million times less faff with MTBs than with road bikes.
"I mean the bits that come forward to the hoods."
I give up.
If I mark some lines on my post will it make life easier?

No, just use your dropper remote...
😉
On a road bike? 😉

Look at that nice horizontal thingummywotsit on the bars 🙂
