Hi,

I have a set of 740mm wide bars (Renthal Carbon Lite) and I always seem to ride with my hands pretty much hanging off the ends of the grips rather than holding fully on..

I have tried riding with hands full on grips and adjusting the position of the levers/shifter but it doesnt seem right and it feels like my elbows are tucked into my side

I could try and cheap set of 780mm wide bars and see how they feel before I splash out on some carbon Renthal.

Any thoughts on cheap 780mm wide bars to try or do I spend more time adjusting my riding positon

Kwack

I used to have 685mm bars and hung my hands over the ends by about 40mm. I wanted some new bars and bought some sixc 785mm bars that I thought I would need to cut down. Turns out they are much better and I now fully hold the grips and don't over hang the end. Performance/handling wise they didn't really feel any different to the old bars other than the fact I was holding more of the grips.

move the grips out by 20mm each side and see how it feels.

Thats a good idea - will move the grips (lockons) and ride leisurely up the road so see what it feels like.

If it feels ok still feel a cheap set of bars might be the way to go

I read this as hand positioning on the bras. I'm disappointed.

Move your brakes further inboard? Is there much of a bend in your elbows? Are they sticking out?

Yeah had other other (but slightly easier to fix) problem of finding my hands were wondering inwards towards the middle, but then again I'm proper old school (for a 21yo) running bar ends on 640mm bars... (were 720mm)

I had the same issue, the fatbar lites were too narrow at 740mm, even with ergon ge1's which add around 10mm a side. In the end I bought fatbar's and cut 10mm off each end, then with the grips they were back at 780.

I would try some grips with only one lock on clamp, as they give you more usable width and can add up to 10mm a side.

daft question but is that safe just having one clamp on.or are you suggesting quick ride round the block rather than full on trail?

One clamp is absolutely fine IME - used to run lockons with gripshift by cutting the grips down - never moved. (Was cheaper to buy full length grips than the short gripshift sepcific ones)

I always seem to ride with my hands pretty much hanging off the ends of the grips rather than holding fully on.
I've always done this too..
I don't like comfortable grips either and my palms have indents from the outer lock-on collars, nothing wrong with it. there are no hard and fast rules.

lock on grips with only one collar don't work for me, but I've also spun many other folks grips that have never budged for the owner within minutes of riding their bikes.
