I tried it on holiday on other peoples bikes but on both occasions (2 years apart so it wasn't like they were teething problems), but both were broken or on the way to being broken by then end of both weeks.

One lasted a day and a half of DH on a ~7" travel bike before the NDS crank bent, the other had enough play in the gearing that it felt like another freehub after 5 (quite long but dry) days riding.

Cool idea, just a shame it didn't work.

At that price, I'm almost tempted to put one on the Alpitude that I'm just starting to build - it's just the weight that's putting me off, that and the drag in the higher gear.
I'd love to try one first.

have one on my cayon torque. does the job without any problems in last 4yrs. have no issues with so called drag, i also ride a fatbike and find none of the problems people say about these. more get on and ride it. nothing is ever going to please everyone all of the time.

Mate used to run one on a singlespeedable frame to make it a double speed. Cool idea...

I have absolutely no need for this product.

I must keep telling myself that.

I thought it might be handy to increase the gear range on a Rohloff, I even started wondering if it used a standard left hand crank so we could use it on the tandem.
It's a 22t or 24t ring though, which would put it way below the recommended minimum gear ratio for a Rohloff.
Is it possible to fit a bigger ring, or is it a unique fitment?

Edit;
Found it. Item 3, page 11 here
Looks like you're stuck with 22 or 24 then.

Increase the size of the sprocket?

I'd need to fit it to the Liteville or Titus 29er as they've got the iscg mounts on them.

1.5kg seems a lot of weight over what I've got now and bar curiosity I can't see it giving me any real advantage.

I think the weight figure includes the BB, but even so it's not light.

Still far cheaper than a Schlumpf setup tho

@MidlandTrailquestsGraham I reckon you'd break that in under 3 weeks.

£100 is still to expensive. I'd rather have some decent normal cranks for that money...

I'm tempted, does anyone know if that deal comes with shifter, bottom bracket and so on?

I'm sure someone will confirm but for MTG and others considering it for more trail/XC type use, I'm fairly sure it needs an ISCG mount to work.

Increase the size of the sprocket?

Wrong way, it's a minimum gear ratio, so with a 22t at the front, I'd need a 7 tooth sprocket at the rear. 😛
If they made a 32t or bigger chainring for the Hammerscmidt, it would work with a 13t Rohloff sprocket.

I reckon you'd break that in under 3 weeks

It's supposed to be made for downhillers isn't it? So I guess it's pretty strong.
Shame about the limited chainring availability, otherwise it could be useful for Rohloffs, especially on tandems.

If it doesn't come with a shifter where is the best place to get one? Had a quick look and can't see one in stock anywhere...

MidlandTrailquestsGraham

sorry - meant to say smaller

For me the reason for doing this would be to give yourself an easier gear but keeping the range.

Despite the warnings.... for a given hill, If you have an easier gear you wouldn't have to smash the pedals so hard - so the torque would be similar. Just as long as you don't start seeking out hills that were previously unclimbable and start smashing the pedals to the same extent.

Decent normal cranks for (almost) same money

Loads of nice truvative carbon bars on sale too.

EDIT - for those talking about putting it on a SS for a bail out gear etc, I'm sure I read an article ages ago about two guys that tried this but found there was far too much friction

I had one.

You don't notice the drag, TBH its there, but no more so than the drag from riding with wide sticky tyres.

Fitted to a winch and plummet type bike you wont notice the slight weight either. Sure if your a XC whippet you will, but then why would you want to fit it for XC.

You will need to service it to keep it greased up and mud free if you ride in the filth all winter. But other that that its pretty much fit and forget. To service it you will need the service tool, or send it off to SRAM.

I did swap to 1x10 however as I got fitter and found I just used it as a bail out winch option.

It worked in principal, but for my riding I found I didn't need it once I got fitter.
