As part of the fitting process for the Hammer, you have to have your BB & ISCG mounts faced so that they are parallel and uniform (as detailed in these instructions). I saw [url=
video from Lynskey the other day that seems to suggest (around 5 minutes in) that this means that one's frame can only ever run the Hammerschmidt afterwards? Is this correct do you think?
well you have to take quite a bit of metal off so i would say yes you stuck with it. also the tool to do it costs a million pounds, we dont have one and i dont know another shop that has one either. its way bigger than a normal facing tool. all that aside they are super fun to ride with.
not quite a million pounds, but I know what you mean, hardly any stores have one! So you reckon my frame is now permanently set up for a Hammershmidt? I couldn't switch back to a normal chainset?
**** that. I'd rather Hammershmidt works on a design-modification that avoids this.
What if you actually prefer a normal set up post-fit?
that's what I'm trying to figure out Hora... thinking about moving the Hammer to a new frame, but does that leave the old frame kind of useless?
Presumably the Hammerschmidt has its own custom BB?
Surely if you want to go back to normal you just fit your old external bottom bracket cups with an extra spacer or 2 to make up for the material removed?
Sure, there would be a couple less threads engaged but no biggy I wouldnt have thought.
yep, 'tis a specific BB for it... standard 73mm though. It's just the comment from Lynskey that's throwing me, making me wonder?
Hammerschmidt AM here for the past 8 months, running on a Sinister Gruitr. I didn't know anybody with the ISCG tab facing tool, so I didn't bother... had the BB faced as normal, but nothing else. You have plenty of spacers supplied with the Hammerschmidt, plus you can always gently sand off a bit of paint/metal on your ISCG tabs if they're clearly out of alignment. I have a few friends also running them like this without having properly faced the tabs. No problems for any of us so far.
The Gruitr has a really neat little plug-on ISCG adapter, so even if I'd faced/sanded it to destruction I could have just bought another one and stuck it on... but I guess this isn't an option for you. However, I'm sure that fitting a Hammerschmidt doesn't "ruin" your frame for life if you ever want to remove it. (a) the amount of metal removed during facing is pretty small and (b) even if you do have alignment issues afterwards, just use normal spacers for the BB and thin washers (like those for disc caliper alignment) on the ISCG tabs.
I'm not sure why anyone would ever want to remove a Hammerschmidt, unless they were selling their frame. One of the best things I've ever stuck on a bike.
I'm thinking of moving it to a full-sus frame, maybe selling the hardtail, maybe not... just trying to figure out if it's an option or not. cheers for your thoughts 🙂
Oh I am liking the idea of the Hammerschmidt
I had a schmidt for a while but got rid and went to single ring instead.
I even ran a schimdt on a yeti 575 which has no tabs, just locked an adapter on and it worked fine. My turner RFX works fine after getting rid of the schimdt, it was fitted professionally in whistler full facing etc and no problems running an Lg1
cool, thanks for the info. interesting to hear you ran it with an adaptor, thought that was a definite no-no!
Schlumpf Mountain Drives were similar in most respects and needed a special tool to carve out an angled chamfer into the drive side of the bb shell to accomodate the unit. I have known one of these units to break and there were no problems reinstalling a normal bb and crankset. I've not encountered any Hammersmidts yet to know if the fitting is similar.
Freeflow Bikes have the tools If I remember right!
Though it wont fit my spicy because of internal BB
