Just been doing the food order for tomorrow and was about to add Halo to the order (Sainsbury’s)

It’s gone from £4 ltr to £8 ltr in about 2 months ! Have I missed some world shortage of washing powder or something?

CRC looks to be the cheapest now at £7 ltr. Almost makes it worth just using normal powder, saving the money to buy new kit sooner.

Yes I know it’s an exciting subject.

anyone use anything else that’s cheaper ?

I've always used a normal 30C wash powder.

I talked to a clothing designer a few years ago from Klatermusen.  She reckoned that what really hammered stuff was that most people use a lot too much powder, especially if they use tablets.  I now prewash everything (time allowing) and try to use about 2/3rds of a tablets worth of powder, split half in normal, half in pre.

My Sainsbury's seem to have stopped stocking it. They have an own brand antibacterial wash but there is nothing on the bottle to suggest it's good for lycra/tech/sports fabric.

Annoying as about half our washes are bike clothing or similarly expensive horse riding gear.

I've noticed it's gone up in price too, always bought a 3 pack from a seller on Amazon for £12 and they're now £27 so £9 a litre! Have found another seller doing 2x2ltr packs for £30 but for some reason I can only order from them if I sign up to a Subscribe and Save regular order deal. There's one on there for sale though at £14 for a litre! That's all when they have stock too, seems to be in short supply.

@wbo - I've always found the breathability goes to pot if I use regular powder or liquitabs. Currently on a bottle of NikWax that was £££ but all I could find at short notice. It works but long term use has always ended up with smelly kit as it has no antibacterial properties. Would love to find an alternative as I sue it for my work clothes too.

Edit: just found this one, £44 a litre 🤣😮

I use Assos sports wash. A shocking £22 a litre but you only need 5ml at a time. It gets rid of the smell from leaving sweaty wet gear in a pile for several days, which normal powder often does not do. And it helps the fabric last longer too.

Halo sports wash is the only thing that removes the perma-pong from smelly Helly Lifa base layers.

White vinegar does too in place of softener.

If you're really stuck then vodka will mask any smell. Seriously.

Is that ASSOS stuff hand wash only or do you put it in the machine @molgrips?

Also it appears to be £29 a litre now!

In our house we rate the HG laundry booster. Works well.

I think being smashed on vodka everytime I do sport might give a downgrade in sports performance 🤷‍♂️

I've always just used liquid soap flakes for anything with a dwr coating.

To be hair I have started using dettol anti bacterial wash with the halo and it made a massive difference to how pongy clothing gets.

I would use that and ordinary washing powder, but when I used ordinary washing powder on some lycra shorts it ruined the lycra in 2 washes

I just use non bio with my bike gear, some people swear by that fabulosa scent booster stuff to get rid of pongy washes.

Whilst on the subject of removing pongs, anyone found a product that removes the smell of weed? Asking for a customer or two.

Machine.

£29 though, oof! I'll have to pay more attention to the economics, make sure I really do only use 5ml.

How?

How much are you using and how hot are you setting the wash?

I use about 30-40ml of Aldi/Lidl colour powder and a capful (old softener bottle) of vinegar for the final rinse.

My daughters skating gear gets washed thisnway and hasn't been wrecked over 7 years.

Bio has been alleged to cause issues with some fabric, as has fabric softener.

Soak in a bucket of warm water and a normal washing detergent for a few hours, then put in the machine on a 40 degree wash, should shift most smells. You could add vinegar for really waffy stuff.

Dump in some Zamo pine disinfectant. The smell goes when it's dried. Some people hate the smell. I like it. It smells like mopped classrooms...

Nikwax basewash is £28 for 5 litres on Amazon.

Seems to work for us getting kit clean and rid of the smell, and we've had rash issues with normal detergent particularly in shorts (even small amounts & soft Scottish water).

Sport wash is different to waterproof clothing wash. We use tech wash for waterproof & never spin them. In bulk it's been cheaper than soap flakes.

Napisan/Vanish/Astonish/Oxyactive/Own brand versions of same are all the same stuff - sodium percobonate. It produces oxygen bleach, which kills bugs, removes smells, and removes stains, but doesn't 'bleach' stuff like normal chlorine bleach.

It's also the same stuff that's in steriliser powders you get for homebrew, and the same stuff that you get for cleaning your espresso machine.

So, use that, especially the own brand stuff or Astonish, cos it's really inexpensive.

How about Ecozone at £4.91 ? Not tried it myself, cos my gear doesn't stink, but seems to claim to do what you whiffy blokes need
(its 750ml)
