They are pretty good for a large range.

But I don't think any of it is Chromium Vandium-if it is then is a bargain.

Otherwise std Steel.

What are you after? socket set? heavy duty or DIY all round?

I bought a new 3/8" socket set fo £18 on offer and the 150pc for £99 all chromium vandium lifetime warranty.

Here you get basic tools which are steel and decent tool box so yeah a good deal.

Don't beleive the sale tags-they just bump the price up for a legal period and able to put it back to normal rrp with a sale sticker...

If you have no other tools and are not planning on hefty car maintenance schedule they actually look like quite a nice bargain.

I haven't got that set, but I have got an excellent Halfords Professional socket set. The Professional range is a bit more expensive, but justifiably so - it's got a lifetime guarantee. If you break stuff, take it back and they'll replace it.

I've worked in several workshops that use Halfords Professional allen key sets, I've got a set myself, and they're superb quality. I haven't used my socket set anywhere enough to judge its durability but it feels solid, it's well-machined and it's a precise fit so it inspires confidence.

I'd try and avoid cheap tools if possible.

+1, I've gone through about 4 sets of cheap ones that were just a waste of money, my new Halford Pro ones are ace.

I have one of the Halfords pro toolboxes with drawers - red steel job. It's well made and weighs a lot on its own. It cost a fair proportion of what that entire tool set cost.

I've also had a fair few cheap spanners - you can get chrome vanadium kit for very little money, but the problem is that it's rarely made to good tolerances, so you round off nuts. I would suspect (and the reviews suggest) that toolset fits into the cheap and badly made category.

Of course, you could buy it, see if they are well made (ie, try undoing a few nuts and bolts with them) and take them back if not.

Halfords pro level stuff is fine, as are Sealey's socket sets.

Additional Information
Higher price was charged in store between 15/9/09 and 12/10/09

Previous prices
Please note, this product was previously on sale at

£99.99 between 16/02/10 and 15/03/10 inclusive
£99.99 between 15/09/09 and 25/12/09 inclusive

Retail manager for 12 years in a large DIY store - this is definately price establishment. They have to put it on the higher price in so many stores for a certain period in the last few months (sorry, forgot the legal limits). If you look the first period is almost exactly 4 weeks. The second period is longer but it's before Christmas where stuff like this will be worth keeping at a higher price, as if you sell 1 at £100 it'll be the same profit as selling maybe 3,4 or even 5 at £50 depending on markup. At Christmas you'll get more people buying them as presents who are unlikely to know the real value of a set like this.

It costs £50, its worth £50. If it went down to £25 it's be worth a go, even just for spares and the toolbox, but I wouldn't bother.

If you get one of these it's actually good kit for the cash.

Halfords pro series all the way. The cheaper stuff is OK but I've got a pro series socket set and a ratchet spanners set that are first class. I have owned both for about seven years now and they are still as good as new.
