I need a couple of bike racks for the roof of my car but can't afford to spend £200+ on some more Thule's so wondered what the Halfords ones were like?
Obviously for £40 they're not going to be groundbreaking but ok for small journeys?

I would try buying second hand Thule kit. I've had the same bike rack mounted all year round for around 6 years and it's still absolutely fine, no doubt that the Thule kit is quality and will last.

Although I'm led to believe that Exodus branded kit from Halfords is made under licence from Thule, so would probably be worth considering too if suitable.

The cheaper Thule carriers are only £60 so it’s perhaps worth stretching to the extra if you can?

Halfords exodus roof bars are definitely made by Thule but I’m not sure about the carriers.

Flip the bike, cable tie grips to roof bar, saddle on other one tied down. Completely secure and costs about seven quid. Did this a couple of times for long trips to the coast on holiday.
Off cuts of yoga mat around grips to protect them.
Eventually bought 2nd hand.

We’ve been using the Exodus bars and racks for a few years now. So far they have been very good. I’ve used them for hard tails, full sus and road bikes.

Halfords racks are fine.

If they weren't and everyone's bikes fell off on the motorway they would be sued to hell and back.

They don't, so they aren't.

I picked up Thule aero bars and feet from Facebook for £75.
In picked up two bike carriers for £60.
I bought Thule Euroway 4 bike towbar rack for £120 with a dent in it from a reversing bump.

Second hand is totally the way.

What car have you got? I've two different foot packs in the shed...

I have an exodus tow bar rack and a friend has a halfords brand version. They have been used for years and the quality is good. It's the fitting of bikes that is the issue, they are fidly where as the more expensive versions like Thule are not.

Not exactly what you were asking but something to consider for roof mounted options.
