Haldon Forest - What to ride?

I normally ride the same loop round Hound Tor/Manaton/Lustleigh* when I come down to Devon each summer but I got out last week and it lots of it was really overgrown with bracken and brambles. I was thinking I'd go and check out Haldon (finally) instead. I've had a look on Trail forks and can see the sanctioned red and blue, but I've read lots over the years about off piste trails round there. Any suggestions on how to get the best out of a couple of hours? I'll be taking my Edit (so looking more for Enduro type stuff).

*Am I mistaken or did this all use to be on Trailforks? has it been taken down? Is it overly cheeky? I thought everything I rode round there was on bridleways.

There's loads of off-piste at Haldon- some off the main trails and some from random starting points around the hill. It's a mix of difficulties, but plenty to keep intermediate riders on their toes.

May be best to join an existing group ride - check out the F2M facebook group for example, who normally have an "enduro" style ride on a Thursday evening.

All the main off piste is on Strava heat maps

And it's pretty much all tolerated by the FC. They occasionally close some trails down, but haven't for some time.

Thanks all!

Thinksta, thanks for the offer, I'm heading back up the road on Wednesday so I've not long left down here. I'll likely get out when an opportunistic parental window opens up (that alligns with a cooler part of the day!).

Been a couple of months since I've been up there, but I doubt it's changed much (apart from probably being a bit blown out and dusty).

Near the main hub there's 2 main bits of off piste...

1st set of trails - follow the start of the blue and then cut right before the road.

2nd set - there's 4 or more that start at the old Bird of Prey carpark near the Belvedere tower.

These are the two best known and easier to find sets of trails (tbh I don't tend to ride them that much as they've been over ridden over the years, lots of 'strava lines'!)

Best bet is to look on Strava heatmaps or the like.

There are other areas of better off piste up there, but harder to find, and a bit more hush-hush.

I was up there for a spin this morning but won't now be about til after you've gone. Sorry. If you're fairly limited on time and no one on here can guide you, then the trails Tom describes are a great starting point. Many might be hard to find though. Strava heatmaps
might be a good shout. That shows it all up, although I don't know how I'd navigate by it. There is a lot there.
