Right, i'm currently going through teh process of a series of interview for a job as a commercial property surveyor, this will be a placement position for 1 year.
Basically my mate, who is one placement at the moment says i should get my hair cut, i say no 😆 says that people he works with, and have met said that they would never employ people with long-ish hair.
Now OK, it is a professional role, and i would have a reputation to uphold, but surly, if everything else about you is great, that shouldn't stop you getting a job. Should it?
This isn't me, but tis kind of like my hair 🙄 all my photos are not allowed on the interwebzz
Your mate is in a position. Why not take his advice. You might not think it's "right" or "fair", but hard lines.
Yeh that's what i'm thinking, guess i need all the help i can get at the moment 🙄
I suppose if you are meeting customers it might make a difference. For techy back room jobs it shouldn't be an issue. If your mate has some inside knowledge it might be worth listening if you want the job
I think women with long hair look more professional...keep it long else you'll look like a lesbian....
Sheldon Brown is often refered to on here but in this case I think we need to refer to the great Jarvis Cocker for guidance:-
"Cut your hair and get a job" - Pulp, Common People
Pfft. My hairs half way down my back or was at interview (its a bit shorter now as i hacked 6" or so off last summer when it was hot but its still 4" past my shoulders at least. Ive got a beard too. Im 27 and im gainfully employed in a job where i regularly meet client and am exposed to the public.
If your qualified for the job and its not modelling / image dependant industry i dont see what all the fuss is about.
If your mate has an inside position go with him. I work for a large hotel chain and we have all sorts of rules about hair and personal grooming, no matter what role we're in. Hair must not extend more than 2" above the head and moustaches must not extend past the edge of the mouth, to name but a couple. It's a bit ridiculous maybe, but there needs to be some discipline.
Everyone always appreciates a smarter person I reckon.
I would get it cut, then grow it as soon as the job was mine.
Shouldn't this be in the 'chat' forum? 🙂
I reckon i could keep the same style thing, just make it look smarter...they don't like "hair on your face" apparently...
Well the job i want i have already had the interview, so tough sh*t 😆
Yeh it should be in chat 😆 sorry, move please mods!
if it's genuinely like in the picture, all you need to do is be able to keep it off your face for the duration of the interview.
Your mate is talking nonsense. I would happily (and have done so) employ someone who was able to present themselves well, both verbally and presentationally for interview, and that included a couple of chaps with hair similar to that - both have been very successful, as it was their aptitude in the role that I was looking for. The hair in the picture is on trend at the moment, but very easy to make office friendly. Match it with a slim fitting two button suit, a slim, plain tie and smart shiny shoes and you'll look fine.
Realistically, if you're asking on here for fashion advice, most people regard outdoor clothing as acceptable going out clothes. Not a good sample. If Houns and MikeT comment, have a listen, otherwise I wouldn't bother.

You can look smart without looking like a clone of everyone else in your workplace.
Be an individual.
Think the last two posts are what i wanted to hear 😆 Yes my hair is very similar to the photo, and yes i do have a slim two button suit, slim tie, and shiny black shoes 🙄
I just find the whole thing, as Rich said, a little weird, i don't want to a clone!
I'll lend you a couple of my pretty hair clips.
So your mate has given you some advice
Ask yourself some questions
Will getting my hair cut be a disadvantage at the interview? - no
Will getting my hair cut be a advantage at the interview? - maybe
What have I got to lose by getting my hair cut [apart from some hair]? - nothing
You decide
You might find it harder to get a job though, it's your call whether you're prepared to risk that?
As said above it isn't fair or right, but definitely goes on.
I've always thought I'd rather not work for someone who didn't employ me due to my clothes/hair, etc, anyway.
Hmmmm how much for the off cuts?
I think the problem with the surveying profession is that they are fairly old fashioned so to speak. Think i may get some off, more work friendly 🙂 Then see what happens. Think best to follow mates advise, well at least to some degree.
Just comb it over/slick it back for the interview. I wouldn't say it was a particularly long/wild mane!
Wear it with the aforementioned suit/tie/shoes combo, job's a good'un.

It's a good point. I used to work in architecture and project management. I let my hair grow after getting the job. The directors did not like it one bit. Even though they never directly said anything the snide or sarcastic comments were plenty. In the end I got sick of working with people who had their heads up their own backsides and i am now a postman. Have been for 12 years now and don't regret 'dropping out' one bit.
Either have a good trim where it's the same style but much shorter then let it grow back in. Or do what someone else suggested and style it back off your face for the interview and first few weeks at work.
I'd like to do all sorts of wierd and wonderful things with my hair, but I fear it would scare my elderly client group.
mate, if your hair is similar to model boys then your hair aint all that long. just very gay.
my hair long (and not gay) and i get on ok. am sort of unemployed/self employed though. got a job on tonight though.
Cut the hair. It'll grow back once you've got the job...
I shaved off mohawk and took out all my piercings when I started my job. T'was a sad day 🙁
I had to shave my hair off for a "job" so i can't really see whats the fuss is about? I would take your freinds advice, get the job and then worry about how you look afterwards.
MTFU, it's only hair!
the property world is very traditional as well, so more likely than not the people who will be interviewing and employing are exactly the sort of people who would be influenced by appearance.
This all depends on how desperate you are for the job.
If you are able to say '**** it' then keep the hair, if not then get it cut.
I have heard this phrase a few times on here but it comes down to "Its the only way to be sure". Usually used in the context of a nuclear bomb or napalm but also applies here.
Personally if i had candidates (a) and (b) and they both came across well with similar cv's and i got on well with them, it would then come down to which one wouldnt spend 10mins in front of the mirror every time they needed a pee......
all my photos are not allowed on the interwebzz
too ugly ??
PS don't let samuri see that pic or his teddy will go right out of his pram 🙁
Well same old same.
It's sad to see people juge you o look rather than on competences...
But the hair on the picture looks fine to me
