Has anybody done this? I'd like to do this on my tourer and I have a couple if questions:

What's the surface like? I currently have 28mm Continental Gatorskins. I have some Schwalbe Martathons which are bigger but slower. Is it worth swapping?

Can anyone recommend any campsites or other places to stay?

What's the best direction to do it in?

Yeah, did it couple of years ago with Mrs Pickers - her 1st tour so we did it fairly leisurely over 4 days.
West to east may be better, not much in it tbh, we started at Ravenglass.
28 or 32 will both be fine, mostly quiet lanes although there's a section on plastic matting through the dunes. It's a good short tour.

West to East of you want more chance of the wind on your back.

Your tyres will be ok with only one rough bit to take it easy on near one of the Forts mid route.

I bivied in a mile castle so can't help you with camp sites.

It's ace, quiet tarmac for 95%.
You can do the Reiver's Route for the return leg.

🙂

Similar thing, just a bit further north.

Did it as a series of day rides, so no idea of campsites, sorry.

Planning on doing both again as an out and back during winter.

Been thinking of doing a C2C2C using Hadrian's for the outward journey East to West, then back along the C2C.

The only bit I've ridden so far is from Newcastle out to the coast, and it's grim in places with plenty of broken glass and patches of knackered tarmac where things have clearly been torched. One particular highlight was on a ride back from the coast turning a corner to find a lass with her pants down and a friend holding her hair out of the way whilst she was sick and going to the loo at the same time. Classy.

Away from Newcastle though it goes through some lovely countryside

The stretch from St. Peter's basin to wallsend is an eye opener to say the least, I live nearby and I wouldn't pedal it alone in the dark! Best to bypass!

The Gatorskins will be more than adequate. Most of it is really nice, quiet country lanes. Not much on route, aside from the odd chunk of wall, so pack some sandwiches and don't expect a cafe stop every 5 minutes. Less challenging, but less spectacular than the default c2c route.

West to east is by far the best chance at getting a favourable wind.

If the rough bit near one of the forts is the bit past Vindolanda then it's been resurfaced recently so no bother.

Places to stay? Depends what you want. The Red Lion in Newbrough is nice obviously 😉
