Been offered an old steel gt tequesta (set up as single speed) to convert to a commuter/hack bike

Ideally I want a nice clean 1x9 (my commute has quite a steep long climb as the main section) so I'm looking for advice on how to set up a retro frame to give me a decent ride

Think frame and forks and wheels are in good nick - rigid forks not bouncers - but the rest is up for debate (tbf so are the forks as the on-one carbons look nice)

All opinions will be read 🙂

My mate's 1992 Tequesta was the first mountain bike I ever rode.

They handle really nicely - I'd just clean it up, replace what needs it with decent modern budget stuff and use it.

Don't know how you fix a rack to a GT though - sure someone's done it.

Is it a black splatter painted one? They're really nice looking bikes.

Sorry it's not much help, but it's a bike that's well worth saving.

Seat post mounted rack will do it.

Topeak one looks really nice but I went for the more agricultural halfords cheapo option and is fine for lighter loads.

For drivetrain I would be tempted to go for Alivio / 8 speed for reduced cost and thief magnetism.

My old 92' Timberline. My brother owns it nowadays. Promises to sell it back when he gets rid. Has rack mount, so should be fine. Full guard's make wet commutes so much more enjoyable. A rack makes any commute more enjoyable. I'd be tempted to matt black it, make it less nickable.

I had 92 gt outpost (orange splatter paint, same as karakorum) and rode really well. kept it rigid, put maguras hs33s on it and 1x9. wish i kept it and was a hoot off road

sounds like a cool little project. before you build it why not make a couple of calls to the local powdercoaters? got my old commuter hack f&f stripped and painted fo 30 quid. felt like a fresh new bike

Was planning the hydraulic Maguras - hadn't really considered mudguards and rack but now I've seen that one then I could be tempted

It'll need a respray tho - but yeah, cheap alivio 1x8 could be good

Don't repaint it!
Seriously, those GT paint jobs are wonderful.

Nicely worn old bikes are just classy - every scratch and ding a memory.
Even if they're not yours 😀
